The first Hartnell story I ever saw. Not because I was around to watch it on first broadcast, but because it was, of course, part of that "Five Faces of Doctor Who" season shown in 1981.
Up until then, Hartnell had merely been illustrations on and inside the Target Books - and more recently photographs in "Doctor Who Weekly" and monthly magazine.
Finally a chance to see his Doctor on screen - and he did not disappoint.
That first episode is still mesmerising imo - and the cave fire story is acted with such conviction that I think it still stands up as a three episode prehistoric drama?

The first episode is a masterpiece and the three cavemen episodes benefit from above average direction and the friction between the Doctor and Ian and Barbara. But perhaps this story is more loved by Doctor Who fans rather than by a mainstream audience of the time?
9/10

"I feel frightened. As if we're about to interfere in something that is best left alone".Two school teachers investigate an unusual pupil and her strange grandfather, who lives in a junkyard. I must have watched the first episode of An Unearthly Child more than any other bit of Who, and I know Hartnell's character mellowed somewhat as the series progressed, but TBH, I really liked that ill-tempered, anti-heroic Doctor of Season 1. There are parts of the original pilot episode that I actually prefer to the transmitted version (though I like both). The first episode is unbelievably good - atmospheric, creepy and full of mystery. From modern school to East End junkyard, from futuristic time ship to the foreboding Stone Age - this is a near perfect introduction to the show and characters. The prehistoric adventure that follows isn't anywhere near as good as the first episode, but is still very enjoyable. 10/10.

"BBC Television Centre on Friday 20th September 1963 - apparently the first time the cast all met. I replaced the rather sparse background with elements from the pilot junkyard set." Clayton Hickman twitter

Absolute classic.
I have a little tradition of watching the first episode on the 23rd November every year.
William Hartnell never fails to captivate me as the Doctor. Probably why he’s one of if not the favourite Doctor of mine.
