In the Censorship files listings I got from NAA (I got the lists from 1965-1980) there’s two Public Eye episodes that were viewed in 1969.
Part of the ABC’s decision to purchase programs was often based on when they could broadcast certain programmes.
Routinely even audition prints were sent for censorship review (no point in buying something you intend to show after Doctor Who at 6.30 in the evening and the censors give it an adults only rating).
The two episodes auditioned and sent for censorship review were Nobody Kills Santa Claus (from Series 1) and Don’t Forget You’re Mine (from Series 2). The ABC ultimately rejected the series (although they did purchase the series from Series 5 onwards in the early 70’s).
Coincidentally both these episodes exist as 16mm TR’s and it wouldn’t be a stretch to think they may be the ABC audition episodes. The ABC’s Thames file established that by the early 70’s they were returning rejected audition prints to London (the file for 1969 is not extant).
I’ve no idea why the ABC rejected the series, but I’ve added the censorship files to my list of files to get a quote for a digital copy.
