It had mummies walking about in it. As a Hammer and Universal Horror fan, that was good enough for me! I recall that Terrance gave a nice introduction to the history of the Osirans or something in a prologue to the novelisation, like Gerry Davis used to with his Cyberman books... ....

Three episodes of near perfection followed by a slightly disappointing one.
I've lost count how many times I've watched this over the years - at least 30 times I would think.
After being a casual viewer of the show I watched this, bought The Doctor Who Monster book and became a long term fan.
9.5/10

I didn't realise that Pyramids Of Mars had an omnibus repeat in 1976. Do we know if that was the same edit that would have been used for BBC Video when it was released in the mid-80s? I hope this version gets added as an extra on the Season 13 Collection Box Set when that one gets released (probably right at the end of the range). Also, that little article says that there were two other repeats from Sarah's era along with Pyramids, presumably omnibus editions too? Do we know which ones they were?

Very few stories get a 10.
This one does.
An absolute bona fide classic. Amazing writer, first class script and a superb cast giving it their all, but never over the top.
If I was asked to compile a short repeat season of Doctor Who, a handful of titles which would show the series at it's very best, this would be one of the few that I would put forward.

I seem to recall The Sontaran Experiment and The Brain of Morbius being repeated. The later an omnibus edition, not certain about the former.

Regarding the RT article above this refers to omnibus editions of Pyramids of Mars, Brain of Morbius and Seeds of Doom (which wasn't broadcast in the end).

Thanks guys, and thanks for the link Black Orchid. I see that Pyramids Of Mars was shaved down to just a little over 60 minutes! Clearly not the BBC Video version then, but a proper butchered edition. How can you possibly lose half an hour from that story?! Utter sacrilege!! I remember the first version that I saw of The Brain Of Morbius was that dreadful 60 minute edit, but back in the 1980s it was the only way to see the story over here. Of course I didn't really know the difference until the full-blooded edition came out.

Yes thanks for the link Black Orchid. That'll come in very handy! Yeh, I've known for a long time that the repeat of Destiny Of The Daleks was my first Doctor Who. Now I know the exact transmission date!! August 5th 1980!! I was 6years and 6weeks old, lol.

" I'm Sutekh the Destroyer. Where I tread, I leave nothing but dust and darkness. I find that good!"Pyramids Of Mars is Hammer Horror with a Science Degree - a near perfect Doctor Who serial. Egyptian Gods, Gothic Horror, robot mummies and sweaty gelignite - what more could you want on a Saturday night? 10/10
