This story's gone on to be one of my favourites.
Wasn't always the case though.
The first I ever saw of The Dæmons (aside from clips) was episode five in black and white on The Pertwee Years video thing when it first came out, what in '92? it was alright I guess, though I wasn't overly struck on it, hardly worth the high praise it got I thought.
Then, a little later on that year, saw some feature on Tomorrow's World about how the colour had been restored on the story and that the whole doings would be repeated the next day (Friday on BBC 2) which came as a bit of surprise to me at the time (I'd given up buying DWM and really didn't bother too much with any of the other sci-fi or cult telly magazines). Anyhow, I caught the repeats and loved it.
I suppose (if I'm being honest) The Dæmons does have it's faults, a tad long and twee, the ending's a bit of a cop out and Pertwee's quite "grumpy" towards folks in it which grates a little but I always thought the good far outweighed the not quite as good. I just adored that "Quatermass and the Pit"/"The Wicker Man" type thing it had going on (which is right up my street), the creepy atmosphere, quaint English village stuff and all that. Some real good imagery there, Azal, Bok and The Master - at his manipulative best here - Delgado was outstanding in this (though I did find it a little silly when he threw his robes over Benton it poleaxed him to the ground like he'd been hit by a ton of bricks!) All nicely rounded out by Miss Hawthorne, Professor Horner et al, very memorable characters for sure.. All good fun.

In episode three The Master is revealing the secrets of the crowd to everyone and asks one man about his wife, is she really at her Mother's house and will she ever come home? Now I think either he's telling everyone that the lady has really left the man for good or that the man has probably killed his wife might be a push for a children's television programme in 1971 but it did give me that impression! Watching this story at the moment! JB

"Devil's End. The very name sends a shiver up the spine."
Is The Daemons overrated? Nah - it's absolutely terrific - one of my very favourite Third Doctor adventures. It's like Dennis Wheatley meets The Wicker Man with bits of Quatermass and The Pit and The Midwich Cuckoos thrown in for good measure. I really enjoy the BBC 3 TV broadcast scenes (why didn't we see more of these beyond the first episode?) and Miss Hawthorne is a delight to watch, a true English eccentric and surely deserved to be a regular (UNIT's Occult Advisor?). "A rationalist, existentialist priest indeed!"10/10
