A very solid, entertaining story indeed. One to watch to remember when the show was really at its golden age. The ending's a little bit deus ex (though no worse than some of the New Series') and for that I deduct it a point, to a 9. Well, that and I do think it's a shame they killed off the grumpy professor too early. He was probably the best character in it

To me, The Daemons has always felt as if it's got a bit of a reputation in Doctor Who fandom as one that you don't knock. I've always really enjoyed it and I do think it's one of the greats of the Pertwee era. I think it's at its strongest in Episode 1 which, for me, is up there as one of the best opening episodes of the classic series. There's such an exciting build-up with all of the events at Devil's End, with the TV crew at the barrow, and the Doctor and Jo racing to get there in Bessie, plus the signpost moving around mysteriously. The wonderful Miss Hawthorne deflecting a rock-wielding policeman without really knowing it apparently, and of course the return of the Master. Episode 1 is just crammed with action and info and characterisation. And even though it's set in May, this is a great Halloween watch. Does anyone here recall watching Season 8 in 1971? Had the Master turning up almost every week become an eye-rolling moment five stories into the season? It's great that Yates and Benton get the chance to really take centre stage in this story as well, and the Brigadier still gets a decent part in it too, despite being kept out of the village by the force field. And his immortal line "Chap with wings there, five rounds rapid" is delivered by Nicholas Courtney so well. Love the effects of items catching fire when they come into contact with the force field in episode 3 and 4. Osgood is great too. I mentioned in The Ambassadors Of Death thread that it's a shame Liz didn't pop up at different times during the rest of the Pertwee era. As a scientist it would've been nice to see her return in The Daemons to help the Brigadier and Osgood break through the invisible barrier. I think Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks missed a trick here. The Morris dancer scenes are a joy. I've always found it a bit of a strange activity - have experienced the bizarreness of it in Monmouth, South Wales (practically my second home that area, I've spent so much time there) - and so I think it suits this story perfectly. There's something evocative of The Wicker Man in the way that the villagers seem to be swept up in Morris-mania, except for one lady who grabs her small daughter and carries her quickly back into the house. Episode 5 is a bit of an anti-climax I've gotta be honest. And even though Stephen Thorne is fantastic as Azal, and would go on to be brilliant as Omega, it's a shame (in my eyes) that all the lines of both characters are delivered and expressed in exactly the same way by such a skilled voice artist. I can't hear Azal without thinking of Omega And talking of Azal....Geoffrey Beevers obviously wasn't told how to pronounce the name. When narrating the novelisation of The Sea Devils and explaining why the Master was being held as a prisoner, Geoffrey Beevers pronounces it 'Arzol' which comes a bit too close to sounding like arsehole, lol. Overall, The Daemons is a winner. It's not quite my favourite of the season, as that goes to Colony In Space for which I have a huge amount of love, but The Daemons gets 8 out of 10 from me.

Back then once a companion had left the series they were gone for good! Never to be mentioned outside of an anniversary year or the odd moment! But yes, Liz coming back for the odd appearance would have been a delight for the long term fans of the show! JB
