How many can you remember?
Are they still entertaining to look back on - and what nostalgic memories do they stir?
How do they compare to today's output?
Or are they dated curios - best forgotten, with surviving episodes left unwatched in the archive?
Please discuss the talent shows and game shows of yesteryear here.....

Have been watching a fair few episodes of the darts game show "Bullseye" that have been airing lately. Must admit, it's all too easy to finish one episode and watch the next one. I do wonder, while watching, how many of the contestants and audience are alive. Sadly the host - Jim Bowen - and I think even the guy who yelled "Iiiinn one!" have left us. And the "gamble" at the end can sometimes be still a bit of a nerve wracking moment, even several decades after the orginal broadcast - even though the star prize has probably rusted to junk or sunk at sea since then.

You can't beat a bit o' Bully! Love watching old classic game shows. I was gonna say I don't know why I find them so appealing, but clearly I do. It's again, the nostalgia. Simple sets with prizes which look pretty tacky now but would've had my eyes on stalks when I was a kid (for example, oh my God, a front-loading video player!!!!!). You could still win a good amount, and you had great hosts like Jim Bowen. I think Tony Green is still with us Cyggy, hopefully in good health.

Something that *bugs* me.....the fact that Challenge TV, which was once putting out a fairly average amount of old game shows for the nostalgic, is now completely saturating its output with endless repeats of The Chase and Pointless - game shows which are already on every single day on the BBC and ITV.
I think the only old game shows on there currently are Bullseye and The Price Is Right (might be wrong).
Surely there must be stacks of old game shows which Challenge could air. I used to *LOVE* The Krypton Factor with Gordon Burns. That was an awesome game show with a great assault course, navigating a plane to land, picking out the right person in a line-up....No money won, just a trophy and the honour of being Krypton Factor winner of whatever year it was.
Treasure Hunt with Anneke Rice or Annabelle Croft! I think that was about the only thing that interested me on Channel 4 when I was a kid, lol.

Sad to discover that "The Golden Shot" (1967-1975) has been all but decimated in the archives, with seemingly only 6 episodes surviving. Listed in THE TOP 100 MISSING SHOWS - According to KaleidoscopeTV Brain's list of lost episodes.... THE GOLDEN SHOTI remember on regularly as a kid, Sad to think it's all but gone. One of the surviving instalments - the 1970 one - can be found here in full on Youtube.

I watched a few episodes of The Golden Shot on YouTube a few years ago out of curiosity as it was before my time. Watched an episode where the presenter (can't remember who it was now) was talking about the blackouts. I think he walked on with a candle. Fascinating watching these pieces of history. It seemed like a fun game show. When I first started working a full time job in 1991 I remember working with a bunch of people who were a lot older than me and overhearing their conversations reminiscing about old TV programmes and The Golden Shot often came up and they would talk about Bernie the bolt.

Yes, me Mum and Dad always watched it, I think. "Bernie the bolt" I indeed remember being mentioned - and also recall the contestants saying the famous catchphrase, "Up a bit, left a bit, right a bit - fire!" as they try to verbally direct the crossbow taking the "golden shot" at the finale of the game. Being such a big hit, am surprised they never tried to revive it in some shape or form over the years, as they did with Blankety Blank and numerous others.

There's also a feature-length documentary on the life of Bob Monkhouse here on Youtube - and 25 minutes into it it discusses his hobby of recording TV shows at home, showing us his first ever video recorder, a Sony CV-2000 (which still works) - and that leads nicely into a section on "The Golden Shot", with numerous clips that he recorded. We also have Bob to thank for one of the full episodes where he has been unceremoniously sacked (by Lou Grade and Francis Essex) a couple of days before and clips are shown in the documentary from that episode, where he is clearly still in shock and distracted from the sacking. The background to the sacking is on Wikipedia - although thankfully it had a happy ending (eventually):

There was "Family Fortunes" of course. The era I mainly remember is with Max Bygraves - which led to that famous clip with the "Turkey" round....

"Opportunity Knocks" was another show that was badly hit by the wipings, More details of what's missing on TV BrainMy Uncle actually made an appearance with the pop group he was part ofL "The Conrads". Saw a photograph of the group once and they were the usual smart appearance and dark suits clone look of many groups of the time, a la The Bachelors, etc. Not realising the shocking state of the show in the archives the family hope was that a clip would pop up on Youtube sometime or perhaps a Network release. That came to an end while scouring TV Brains listing the episodes lost in action: The anecdote passed down in the family is that they performed a cover of Frankie Laine's hit "Cool Water" during the show. Hughie Green insisted that they added a comedy routine to the song, with buckets and threatening to throw them on the audience, when they actually contained bits of paper, while the band would actually preferred to have performed the song straight. So they blamed Hughie for ending up in second place. I don't know who won first place though. Objectively blaming Hughie could be viewed as a face-saving exercise though. It may well be that the winning act did indeed have an edge. It may have been sibling rivalry, but after this my late Dad, along with my (also late) eldest sister - who were both dab hands at playing the acordion - went along to audition to appear on the show, playing the accordion as a duo. Hughie watched and then suggested that my Dad step back and let my sister appear on the show solo. My Dad declined. So that was that. Although, no doubt, any resulting episode would have been wiped in any case.

A contestant on Opportunity Knocks, Malcolm Drew, on the missing "Scriptwriter's Chance Show from 1973 has pieced together the interview with himself and the enactment of the sketch wot he wrote (which starts with a "Doctor Who?" joke) using the soundtrack and what looks like 8mm off screen footage......

Opportunity Knocks turns out to be another show that involved a sacking. Seems that Hughie Green was eventually dropped from Opportunity Knocks after insisting on airing his political views repeatedly during episodes of the show - and some time after, ended up having a verbal spat with a reporter at a Nottingham furniture store he was making an appearance at....
