One of the things I remember about this one is what a looooong wait there had been for this season to roll around. JNT had said something to the effect of "When a show has been off the air that long, when it comes back it needs to be spectacular!" and spectacular is what I was expecting. The opening shot duped me at first and this looked amazing, but also remember being immediately disappointed when the TARDIS arrived in the usual kind of set. As this thing plodded on I felt that this opening story wasn't all that great. Drathro the robot got on my nerves. Some of the "humorous" dialogue from all and sundry seemed a bit self-consciously forced after the powers that be had moaned about the violence and it all seemed a bit half-cooked and tepid as a story imo. The rest of the season would be better - surely? Still, at least Doctor Who magazine was optimistic at the time......

To this day I am still not 100 percent certain if that is meant to be the Jon Pertwee or Tom Baker Doctor that Colin is channelling when he says "My head hurts abominably Sarah Jane" when he wakes up. Am leaning more to Tom as Col is giving the words a bit of a fruity, plummy phrasing? But otherwise sorry Colin, as I thought that Peter made a better stab at giving us both Hartnell and Troughton in episode 1 of "Castrovalva".

The mysterious Planet was bad. Not as bad as what they have been making these days (not that I watch the show anymore) but pretty bad! The next one wasn't much better either or the Vervoid one but I did like the reveal of whom The Valeyard really was in the final story but then again JNT had ruined that by not going the whole hog and giving us a final incarnation of The Doctor who had allowed himself to been drawn to the dark side when he knew his time was soon going to be up! It's strange that The Valeyard never came back as I was expecting him to be the main baddie in the final Sylvester McCoy story of 1987 but was not to be! I did read that he was pencilled in as the main villain of a story in McCoy's fourth series had there been one but as we all know... JB

I remember when I first saw this being mightily impressed with the opening space station scene but finding what followed was so uninvolving and mediocre. Even the revamped theme tune sounded miserable to my ears. It's one I very rarely bother to rewatch and always tend to skip over tbh.

It's funny how tastes can differ so greatly, isn't it. I actually really like The Mysterious Planet, and it's my second favourite of Season 23 after Terror Of The Vervoids.
I really like how the Doctor and Peri find out that they're at Marble Arch tube station, the sparseness of the forest and the mystery of Earth's fate, the above ground survivors living a primitive lifestyle, and the below ground survivors dominated by a maniac robot.
I don't dislike Peri and the Doctor's bickering relationship in Season 22, but I'm kinda glad that it's (albeit inexplicably) out of the way by Season 23 as it does beg the question why do they bother to travel together (especially in Timelash), even though they clearly care about each other's welfare.
There's definite elements of The Krotons to The Mysterious Planet (another story I love). The elite chosen, such as Humker and Tandrell. I concede that it's not Robert Holmes's finest, but I find it far more watchable than a few of his previous scripts, particularly The Sun Makers and The Power Of Kroll.

"Planets come and go, stars perish. Matter disperses, coalesces, reforms into other patterns, other worlds. Nothing can be eternal."
Strangely enough, I quite enjoy 'The Mysterious Planet' - it's certainly not the worst 6th Doctor adventure and probably my favourite serial of the whole of Season 23 (I say 'probably' because I haven't watched 'Trial' for quite some time and my opinion may have changed). I still like Episode 1's opening shot of the Tardis being pulled into the tractor beam of the Time Lords' space station, Dibber and Glitz are an entertaining Robert Holmes double act and being a Carry On fan, it's nice to see Joan Simms in Doctor Who. However, I really like the Planet Of The Apes style revelation that *SPOILER* the Doctor and Peri were on Earth all along.
Plus, Drathro is a cool robot design.
7/10

Jonathan Powell's infamous memo about this story, sent to the production team on Monday, 24th February 1986: Did he actually make some good points - or not know what he was talking about?
