I think Jonathan Powell managed to be an even bigger A**H*** than Michael Grade. And seeing that photo of him, he even LOOKS like a complete A**H***.
In my opinion, it is not a company executive's JOB to be nit-picking, micro-managing control freak. They should hire someone to do a job, they, GET THE HELL OUT OF THEIR WAY and let them do it.
The full truth is, BOTH these IDIOTS personally hated the show and wanted it GONE, but would never admit to this while they were still employed by the BBC. It's no way to run a business, and deliberaterly SABOTAGING your MOST POPULAR show worldwide which is bringing in more money that anything else you're doing is counter-productive, to say the least.
It's been suggested, of course, that the "Trial" was blatent allegory, and "The Valyard" represented Grade and/or Powell.

It's absolutely maddenning, but, once again, somehow, I came in halfway thru "The Mysterious Planet", and didn't catch the first half until the 2nd time I saw it.
When I finally did, I immediately recognized the BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES tribute, and I find I like this version of the story FAR BETTER than the 1970 movie, which was an atrocity on almost every level.
I'd never seen a CARRY ON film back then, but I have now. Awhile back I managed to catch all but one of them, and this year, I managed to get the first 4 on Blu-Ray. (There's a "complete" box set, but it's PAL DVD.)
Tony Selby is a RIOT. My favorite bit is probably near the end, when he abruptly tells the robot he's got all the energy it needs back at his spaceship, and the STUPID machine believes him!!!
"Strange how low cunning should triumph while honest reasoning should fail." "Don't knock low cunning, Doctor. After all-- you're still alive!"
THE funniest part of this week's AVENGERS I watched was when Selby, playing a crooked car repairman, drives up to "help" Steed, whose car has broken down (thanks to Selby sabotaging it). Steed, smiling, walks up to him, and without even saying a word... BEATS THE LIVING HELL out of the guy... BEFORE then demanding answers. I really liked that. (The guy had already been involved in 2 murders, and Steed knew a 3rd one was in the offing.)
Looking back, I really wish we'd seen this story without the "Trial" segments interrupting it... then gone into the next story without the "Trial"... and THEN, had the "Trial", all by itself... and, having resolved the story, then had "Vervoids" all by itself, either to finish the season, or, open the next season. Decades back, I had an idea there should have been another story to open the season, which would set up events, and allow things to unfold in the order they actually happened.
I'm afraid the whole "Christmas Carol" structure just NEVER worked for me.

I'm inclined to agree with the above.
I'm not sure how the mid 70s 'Who was regarded as violent, as the small kids who watched the show in the 60s were now teens at least and well used to action 'shoot-em-up' kind of stories. By the 80s, I suspect many fans were now well into their twenties and maybe more demanding of serious and well written adventure scripts (we've now regressed back into a pre-teen seemingly 'girlie orientated' show imo). I keep banging on that this show was NEVER a mainly small kids production, but maybe I'm peeing in the wind with this vibe?
It's obvious from the increased hair length that The 6th and Peri had been travelling a good while together (ignoring the real eighteen-month hiatus) and good that they'd calmed down towards each other. Colin needed to tone his character down a bit and if memory serves (I've only just watched the first episode again), he was beginning to (and definitely has in his audio stories, bless him).
I'll keep watching and mainly listening to the commentaries, which I missed when I first got the DVDs.

What's with the theme tune, its 'poppiness' an even further departure from Delia's original imo.

What's with the theme tune, its 'poppiness' an even further departure from Delia's original imo. It always sounded like a miserable mess to me. Hated it.
