Whenever I try to watch this story I try to use the same suspension of disbelief that I would if watching a stage play.
Even then though, I find it a bit of a nightmarish slog after Episode 1.

I like this story although I admit it is extremely slow in places.
The planet Vortis is very well presented and looks totally alien, though sadly you can hear the actors walking on the boards. I admire the ambition of the design and the fact that all the characters are non-human. Nu Who with its huge budget (in comparison to 60's Who) never attempted an alien landscape like this until The Doctor's Daughter.
The Animus is very creepy and effective and the four regular cast members one of the best Tardis crews in the show's history.
7.5/10

Hartnell fluffs his lines in episode 1 when trying to open the Tardis door :
IAN: Well, come on then, Doctor. Ah. How do we open the doors? We have no power.
DOCTOR: Ah, dear, dear, dear, dear, dear. Hmm. It's one thing after another.
IAN: (Smiling.) Hmm?
DOCTOR: Yes, well, I, er, I, er. I didn't want to, er.
IAN: Hey?
(The Doctor takes his signet ring off.)
DOCTOR: This is not merely a decorative object. Come along, come along.

It starts off well, but then it descends into dullness with the occasional bout of silliness thrown in (the Pythonesque Optera). If it wasn't for the Zarbi's beeping, chirping and trilling it'd be a great cure for insomnia.

If anyone dislikes The Web Planet I can totally understand the reasons they put forward.
And yet, I've always loved it. I think it's so atmospheric. I love the book with its brilliant illustrations, which started me down the road in my appreciation of this story.
I'm certainly not blind to its shortcomings, but I can see past that and understand why they're there. To some it may be overlong, but I can immerse myself in this one and it's not a chore for me.
And I remember someone from here (can't remember who) saying that if this story was missing it may very well be up there among the most sought after to be returned, such is it's uniqueness. Abso-flippin-lutely!
This is up there as one of my favourite Hartnell era stories, and one I have the biggest affection for.

I love this story if for nothing else the TARDIS being drawn off course and landing on Vortis! Then later the console starts spinning around as if the ship is possessed. The Antlike Zarbi and the Butterfly Menoptera battling through a Vaseline lens was excellent along with the clangy music and then the final reveal of the cancerous-spider-like Animus sucking the travellers's life forces inside the Carcinome while they fight for their lives was pretty creepy! It's images like this one that always got my imagination going when I was a kid. I understand that compared to modern effects this is very basic, but it's the crater-like surface and the planets in the distance. As I said previously, people that don't like The Web Planet can carry on yawning, but for me it's a very unique and special story.

Colourized by Clayton Hickman Hmmm. Looks good, but a Zarbi should only ever be seen in black and white.
