I should dislike this movie, with the clumsy hand of Shatner all over it's wonky production, but I don't. In fact I love it. I love it for being a fascinating cinematic car crash, to the point where it's my second favourite Star Trek movie - after TMP. Shatner has wanted to do a special edition of it for years now - presumably adding back in the rock men ending, but Paramount have always refused to stump up the money for such a project. Can't say I blame them.

James Doohan - who despised both William Shatner and what was done to his character in this movie - tries to help convince the general public that this film is worth getting excited about when it comes to renting it from your local VHS dealer..... So many people desperate, eager - and even angry - to see it. Is this from an alternative universe?

As Star Trek movies go, it certainly doesn't feel anything like a full meal of a movie. It feels a bit half-finished frankly, and I can understand a lot of fans feeling short-changed by it overall. And even at 8, I could kind of tell that it was a bit of a wannabe in terms of the comedic success of the previous film.
Being that it's still the classic old crew, there are still some gem moments in there ("Jim... ya don't ask the Almighty for his I.D....!"), the business with Klaa the Klingon is always entertaining, and McCoy reliving his worst day of his life is incredibly well performed. Even as the weakest of the original cast films it still has more of the Trek magic in it than any of the JJ Abrams reboot films do.
I'll go for an even 5.

There is fan suspicion that there was a sequel of sorts to this film in the TNG episode, "The Nth Degree" - and that "God" was actually one of the race of Cytherians seen in that episode.... CytherianRumour is that the TNG production team fully intended the link, but didn't want to make it explicit on screen (perhaps because Gene Rodenberry had decreed that the events of Star Trek V were non-canonical?).

This is the PBS drama "LBJ" - which Shatner was watching and led to him casting Laurence Luckinbill as Sybok, based on this performance....
