I love it for the Barbara showdown with the Doctor. And the Cameca scenes with the Doctor are a delight too.

A colour picture that appeared in Radio Times in 1964 - the original photo has since been lost.

"He has made us rulers of the land. For this he demands blood. And he shall have it."
Confession - I used to find the historical tales a bit of a chore to sit through, but now I actually prefer them to a lot of the more futuristic or fantastical tales - maybe I'm finally growing up. Anyway, Episode 1 kicks off at a cracking pace (anyone who thinks the Classic series was slow and ponderous, should watch this), scenes are established and then move on very quickly- Oh look, an Aztec tomb, Barbara tries on a bracelet, Barbara is declared a Goddess, the time travelers are cut off from the Tardis, Ian is made a Aztec warrior, Susan becomes a handmaiden, the Doctor flirts with a lady in the Old Folk's Garden, and because Barbara wants to change history, a human sacrifice ceremony is interrupted (but the fella kills himself anyway) and we see John Ringham's Tlotoxl established as the villain of the piece. But the best, most important part is the lively exchange between the Doctor and Barbara on the morality of trying to alter the past (being a Goddess has already gone to Barbara's head):
Barbara: "Don't you see? If I could start the destruction of everything that's evil here, then everything that is good would survive when Cortes lands." The Doctor: "But you can't rewrite history! Not one line!"
I notice that in The Aztecs, Hartnell gives a particularly spirited, energetic performance - his no-nonsense Doctor is sharp and quick witted - Bill is clearly enjoying himself. I found it all utterly capivating, John Lucarotti's story is powerful and daring and touches on surprisingly adult themes. One of the very best serials from Doctor Who's first year.
9/10

Currently ploughing through it, but finding it difficult I must say. I'll keep on to the end and edit if I feel any different after. I found it a bit unnerving when I first watched it on transmission I seem to remember.

The "Aztec" story I've probably watched more than any other is "Cloud City of Gold" (1968), from the 2nd season of SPIDER-MAN. In this episode done by Ralph Bakshi & artist Gray Morrow, it's found that some Spanish conquistador, "De Vargas", is living in the 20th century and keeping a mysterious "lost" city of gold in terror, while genuine supernatural things are going on, including a flying, solid gold eagle, and a giant spider whose home is in the mouth of an active volcano (SAY WHAT??). Over the years, I watched this thing dozens of times before I came to the conclusion-- based mostly on the last 5 minutes of it-- that, although they never admit it, the whole thing NEVER HAPPENED, but was purely in the imagination of the characters. (A "dream" episode but where nobody actually fell asleep... heh.)
Whenever I watch the 2nd & 3rd seasons of that show, I always wonder what kind of drugs (and how much of them) the people who made them were taking at the time. It remains a deeply weird cartoon show. The music is FABULOUS, though, much of it taken from the English KPM Library.

I seem to have vague memories of that particular Spiderman cartoon. Fascinating...
Speaking of Aztec themes - have you ever seen that old TV series 'The Feathered Serpent'? If you haven't, you really should.
