The best telling of the Robin tale?
Who was the best Robin, Praed or Connery?
And does it still stand up as a classic series?
The full, official Clannad video.....

Never really watched it much at the time - and still have to give the series a proper viewing. Even at the time I thought the casting of Jason Connery was blatant nepotism. I thought he had been a plank of wood in "Varos" - just really bad acting imo - and here he was being given the lead role - as a character that his dad had coincidentally played in the film "Robin and Marion" (1976) That being said, I would like to give this series a proper watch - to see what all the fuss was about at the time. Loved the Clannad theme song though.

Didn't catch it when it was first on. I have the DVD boxset with the cellophane wrapper still on it knocking about somewhere.

Writer Richard Carpenter was a very dear and long standing much loved friend of mine since the late 70's (he bought all my expensive HiFi gear when I married and the house [and neighbours] couldn't take the fridge sized speakers - cough). Wonderful, kind, gentle-man in every sense and I miss him dearly. I think his wife passed a few years after and his house in deepest mid-Herts overlooking fields appears to be rebuilt or heavily re-modelled. Richard never met my wife, but he'd phone up and they'd talk for ages about all sorts as if they'd known each other for years before he transferred over to me Wrong forum for this memory, but 2:29 in you can see one of 'my' ATC active speakers lurking behind him - He used them daily for music and radio when he was writing up until his passing and I couldn't afford to buy them back, let alone accommodate them when his son offered them. Sorry for the digression but the sound they gave to TV programmes as well as music I've never approached since and I miss 'em...
The show was deliberately filmed on 16mm I remember him telling me but the reason is now lost in the mists of time. The first series was quite 'mystical' I thought and we all agreed that after Michael Praed became unavailable (due I believe to his role in Dynasty), the second series lost something. Richard was kind to the much later remake but he had feelings about the filming location not being right or something similar and the 'vibe' wasn't there. P.S. There was talk of Catweazle being made into a film but as it takes years to raise interest and funding, it sadly never happened and lead actor Geoffrey Bayldon has now also passed.

Michael Praed was in the first two series, I believe it was the third series (where Jason Connery took over the role) that lost a certain something. The third series was as long as both the first and second series put together, so perhaps that's where the confusion lies?

I actually remember reading that article and discussing it with my mother and sister, particularly the fact that the traditional version of Robin Hood had no magic in it. Adding that mystical element (plus that haunting Clannad music - I still have the album) was so important to the series, the traditional version seems lacking without it. It is the only version of Robin Hood for me. Gosh though, that " Your chance to win a place on the Space Shuttle" banner really dates that. Would that have been the one that blew up?

Gosh though, that " Your chance to win a place on the Space Shuttle" banner really dates that. Would that have been the one that blew up? Dunno I'm afraid. Haven't got a copy of that TV Times to hand or found out anything online. What I do know though is I went on a school trip to Stanstead Airport to see the Space Shuttle Enterprise in the summer of '83. All I can remember from that trip was me and my school mates being bitterly disappointed that we weren't allowed to get too close to the Space Shuttle (us dumbasses really thought at the time we'd be allowed to see the cockpit lol) and well, to be honest, we were more taken with a group of local catholic school girls who (later on) mooned at us from the back of their school bus... Edit: Anyway, I wonder if that TV Times competition was to win a place on the Space Shuttle Enterprise...
