I think some of the writing and plotting is a bit ropey in retrospect, but there's no denying that this worked at the time?
Such a shame they followed it up with somthing like 'Time-Flight' as a season-ender. What a misjudgement, in the same way as having 'The Twin Dilemma' follow 'Caves'.

Thought it was a very well made story. Had a sort of lightning pace to it. Very exciting to watch. The Cybermen's return was a shock (at the time), and they were very effective in this one, quite menacing, dangerous. David Banks' Cyberleader was the dog's bollocks. Not so keen on Beryl Reid but I guess she was passable Still, we got rid of Adrip (result!). Mustn't forget the great music either. Excellent.

Lol at ol' Davo pretending to tie up his laces or something trying to make himself scarce there:

My all time favourite story. 10 out of 10.
My favourite TARDIS crew, and joint favourite season. A real roller-coaster ride of a story. I love the two different settings of the cave and the space freighter, and tying the storyline together in the 4th part with a seemingly throwaway few comments about dinosaurs and asteroids in the 1st.
The breath-taking reveal of the Cybermen at the end of part 1 is something that takes me straight back to watching it for the first time in 1982. Such a well kept secret and it works brilliantly. Unfortunately it's now treated as though everybody knows that so the cover of the DVD gives it away, the blurb in the booklet gives it away, etc.
One of my closest friends has a son who has just started watching my old Doctor Who DVDs at random and is loving the ones I have given to him so far. I'd love him to be able to experience Earthshock the way I did, but it won't happen. There's too many spoilers around even before he puts the disc into the player. Shame.

My favourite Davison story! You can keep Androzani! Loved the ending to episode one in 1982 and as I was recording it every two nights a week couldn't wait for Tuesday night! Then I'd replay them on Wednesday afternoon and glory the scene with the previous Doctors and the fantastic Cyber history! Some of the scenes weren't too good with two laughing Cybermen in the corridors and the Trooper gal getting killed and coming into the TARDIS moments later!!! JB

"For some people, small, beautiful events is what life is all about!"
Fast paced, thrilling and violent - Earthshock is one of the best Doctor Who Serials of the '80s and probably my all-time favourite Cyber-story (I even like Beryl Reid in this). It features the coolest Cybermen design (love those moonboots!), Malcolm Clarke's superb music and a tragic end for Adric - death with the dinosaurs! (“Now I’ll never know if I was right”).
10/10

I give it a 10. It more or less never fails to entertain, and was just the kind of story Davison needed.
It inspired a lot of lesser imitations after, but this one hit hard and did it all right.
