I liked this at the time of broadcast - and probably thought it was the strongest story of the season. But now think it's not much to write home about. I do think that Sophie Aldred is dreadful in her debut: "I AIN'T GOT NO MUM AND DAD!!!" etc. Edward Peel is the highlight of this imo, taking his role seriously and not sending it up a la Soldeed at all. I also like the dialogue during Mel's farewell scene, which was, of course, a recycled audition piece from when Sylv was auditioning for the role. That literal cliffhanger ending still looks daft though....

Haven't seen this in years - good Raiders of the Lost Ark special effect at the end with Kane's face melting.
Glad to see the back of Mel, but this story probably features Ace at her most obnoxious?
6/10

A 2.
I'm afraid I just found this one painful.

"That's right, yes, you're going. Been gone for ages. Already gone, still here, just arrived, haven't even met you yet. It all depends on who you are and how you look at it. Strange business, time."
What marvelous dialogue! (it reminds me of something said by Dr Manhattan in Watchmen).
I know it has its detractors but Dragonfire is one of my most frequently watched McCoy stories - it's weird and silly and funny and scary all at once. I admit, it looks a bit cheap and over-lit (like most 7th Doctor serials), but I enjoy it all the same.
Mel and Ace make a very strange but interesting pairing, it was cool to see Glitz again and I adore anything featuring Patricia Quinn (Belazs) - I even like the design of the Dragon (though it is a bit of a H.R.Giger/Alien rip-off). Tonally, Dragonfire is an odd one - in some ways, it's quite kiddy (treasure maps and ice gardens and an obvious Wizard Of Oz influence,) but then there's those references to philosophy and Existentialism -"Excuse me. What's your attitude towards the nature of existence?" -not to mention the gruesome face melting scene at the end.
8/10
I'd give it 9/10 but it loses a point for the naff ice statue of Xana, Kane's dead girlfriend. What were they thinking?

It's the only story from Season 24 that I actually enjoy, and I also think it's one of McCoy's best stories.

It's the only story from Season 24 that I actually enjoy, and I also think it's one of McCoy's best stories. I know that Season 24 isn't very popular with a lot of fans, and I understand why (I didn't like any of the stories originally, and to some extent, it looked like the whole show had taken a step backwards into the realm of cheapo kid's TV) but after I'd learnt to appreciate McCoy, I eventually saw things differently. There's only 'Time and the Rani' that I still have a problem with.

There's only 'Time and the Rani' that I have a problem with. I *enjoy* the 7th Doctor era from Dragonfire onwards. As for Sylvester, it was only Time And The Rani where I had any issue with his performance, (actually, along with the "Unlimited rice pudding" speech from Remembrance), but part of the issue with both instances has got to be with the scripts themselves and how he was encouraged to play the scenes. To be fair, even though I don't enjoy the first three stories from Season 24, I've seen them all several times in the past decade when I've done big Doctor Who rewatches.

Maybe it's growing on me a little, but the over-lit sets here and there tends to dilute things a bit. All the commentaries from this season seem over-awed by the effects possible in the post 2005 series, although they don't touch on the gradually weakening scripts. I appreciate the show did fantastic things on a painfully low budget and seemingly with little support from 'on-high' for their efforts, but I think J N-T maybe should have moved on to other things by this time and into light entertainment, which I believe is where he'd like to have gone.
