Considered one of the weaker Davison stories, or so it seems, I actually like this one a fair bit.
Yes, they certainly do overdo the Chinese Dragon dancing, to the point where it felt like a bumper episode of 'Blue Peter'.
The start of the stories felt a bit like a Hartnell tale to me, with our gang exploring a strange environment. Always thought that the TARDIS helmets were a bit lame though.

Both Nyssa and Adric are child geniuses so there is a ridiculous scene where the eldest companion Tegan has to ask what sodium chloride is and what robotics means.
Probably Janet Fielding's worst performance as Tegan.
It is straining credibility that Adric thinks Monarch's plan of converting people into androids is a good idea.
A dull script lacking in action and excitement.
6/10

I always found this one such a dull, nondescript story.

I've always enjoyed this DOCTOR WHO serial as well. However, there's one thing that's always annoyed me... the title. Four what exactly? Four days? Four weeks? Four months? Four time travellers? Four bloody what?

In Australia, there are more than 250 Aboriginal languages - including 800 dialects - and after living here for 55 years - as of today - I still don't speak any of them. And as the Time Lord's gift of communication was previously revealed in THE MASQUE OF MANDRAGORA, why was any of this nonsense necessary in the first place?

I've always found Four To Doomsday to be a really enjoyable story. I think Stratford Johns does a great job as Monarch, and I love the mysterious cliffhanger to episode 1 where Enlightenment and Persuasion announce themselves again after transforming out of their 'frog skin'.
I also like the dynamic between Nyssa, Tegan and Adric here. They've been thrown together during recent events, it's not surprising that they're gonna get frustrated by each other and quarrel to some degree. And this on/off frustration with each other paves the way for Earthshock.
I don't see Four To Doomsday as a classic like I personally deem Kinda, The Visitation and Earthshock to be, but I see it as a fun little story from my favourite season. One of several guilty pleasures.

"In space forever, going nowhere".
Things to like: The set design - reminds me of something from the TV version of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy or even Blake's 7. It screams; 'BBC Sci Fi in the '80s!' Incidental Music - Very good, nicely atmospheric, especially 'Exploring The Lab'. I like the characters of Monarch and (particularly) Enlightenment and Persuasion (cool green outfits).
Things to dislike - the Doctor's companions are still pretty boring and Davison hasn't really established his character yet (no surprise, this was his first serial...). Plus, his hair is too short. This is a rather generic Doctor Who story - the Tardis appears on a big spaceship, on its way to Earth to conquer the planet. Almost feels like a Hartnell tale, but without the charm, style or chemistry between companions.
However, Four To Doomsday is not quite the worst 5th Doctor adventure - it's better than Timeflight, Arc Of Infinity or Warriors Of The Deep.

Yes, I forgot to mention the set design! Beautifully done all the way through. But I particularly love Monarch's throne room, that set is beautifully layed out with him perched on high with Enlightenment and Persuasion either side of him.

''However, Four To Doomsday is not quite the worst 5th Doctor adventure - it's better than Timeflight, Arc Of Infinity or Warriors Of The Deep.''
I disagree personally. Those three are weak but at least have their merits, Arc's first and last episodes are solid with the former setting up the plot well and the last making the most of Amsterdam, (Plus, in an odd turn, Davison gives one of his best performances not as the Doctor but as the Frankenstein inspired Omega in episode 4) and Warriors is utter crud, suffering from falling down scenery and the Doctor suddenly turning into a t**t but again, Davison knocks it out the park and the first episode is admittedly decent until the Tardis arrives. ''Plus, his hair is too short.''Yeah, he does look more like Tristan here than the Doctor LOL. His later long hair in Season 20 from Enlightenment to The Five Doctors is fabulous. View Attachment Good points. I haven't watched Warriors of the Deep for donkeys - may give it a rewatch tonight. "His later long hair in Season 20 from Enlightenment to The Five Doctors is fabulous" - agreed.

Couldn't give a stuff about his hair (or the highlights he apparently needed to have). Sets look good but the companions, especially Adric, the actor still a bit out of his depth I feel, I find annoying. Can't believe watching the 'in-studio' extra that this bloody show got made at all in a convincing fashion frankly.
It's OK, at least to me.
