I think that the ace in the deck of this story is the count. A villain, but a charming one.
I quite like this era of the show in retrospect, where it is all princesses and castles. And, in this case, swordfights.
I love the end swordfight and the last shot of K9 drifting and helpless.
Okay the Taran Wood Beast isn't the greatest of incidental monsters, but you can't have everything.
Good fun imo.
Even if it is a blatant rip of of "The Prisoner of Zenda".

I give this story a rating of 8/10 though next time I shall not be so lenient.

This is a great fun story. Nice location work. Loved old Peter Jeffery in this as Count Grendel.

I watched this again recently and rather enjoyed it.
Proof that my original opinion may not be entirely accurate.

Currently reading the Target novelization (David Fisher version) and although this serial is probably my least liked of the Key To Time season, it's still very enjoyable. A science fiction take on The Prisoner Of Zenda, Tom is very funny ( "Do you mind not standing on my chest? My hat's on fire") but Peter Jeffery's Count Grendel steals the show. Sadly, I'll probably never get to own an Eaglemoss Taran Wood Beast figurine. 8/10

That awful wood beast aside, I enjoyed this romp and I felt the acting was masterful and very well done. Sorry Ms Tamm, I'm not a fan (poet and don't know it).

Watched Episode 1 of 'The Androids of Tara' again last night and found it thoroughly enjoyable. It says a lot about Season 16 when I can watch my least favourite serial from the Key To Time arc but still be entertained - the whole production is delightful. Mary Tamm looks stunning in that purple outfit- she was surely one of the most glamorous companions.

TARA is no doubt my favorite story of season 16, with RIBOS being a close 2nd.
Graham Williams may have wanted an "ice queen", but they got someone who was so nice that it came right thru that outer facade.
Oh yeah, and Peter Jeffrey just steals anything he appears in (THE AVENGERS, THE NEW AVENGERS, DR. PHIBES, THE BEST HOUSE IN LONDON-- heeheehee). If they really felt they needed to bring back The Master, HE should have played him, not any of those other guys.
Funny thing-- I've only seen THE PRISONER OF ZENDA (with Ronald Colman) once! But I have seen the GET SMART version countless times.

"Grendel, you forgot your hat!"
So I watched all four episodes of Tara again and found it really entertaining (for me, it's usually a bit of a bore). We saw the delightful Mary Tamm in four roles ( Romana, Princess Strella, Robot Romana, Robot Strella) but not enough of the Taran Wood beast (possibly a good thing).
My only moan is that apart from a few guards/soldiers and poor Madame Lamia, nobody died and the swordfight between the Doctor and Count Grendel went on too long.

Fine actor. Great turn as Count Grendel.
