Loved this story. Kind of bonkers but it works - all that sailing ships in space and stuff. Right up my street. Leeeeeeeeeeeeee John though...

A bizarre performance by Leee John, one of the worst in Classic Who - I'm afraid the late Lynda Baron's cackle gets on my nerves after a bit too.

Had this one too. Certain I also had a cutting of Janet Fielding from Mawdryn Undead in aged make-up with a wedding veil on. The lady's a pretty good pirate

A rare 10 from me, for a rare jewel.
It's a damn scandal we never saw more from Barbara Clegg (aside from in Big Finish), as she really seems to know how to write a story that is dense with intrigue, with not a scene wasted, and a new dramatic twist in each new part.
If any writer was going to be the next Robert Holmes, it was probably her.

"Look at the screen. We're not on a yacht, we're on a ship. A spaceship".
I enjoy watching Enlightenment - perhaps the best part of The Black Guardian Trilogy. I like the idea of the Eternals and their cosmic boat race to stave of the boredom of immortality (like Mawdryn Undead we see characters who are blessed/cursed with eternal life). It has a kind of Sapphire and Steel vibe to it, and the Edwardian designs of the yacht and costumes of the crew were very well done.
Episode 1 is very pleasant (keeping the big reveal of the ships in space to the very end was a wise decision) but the whole thing gets a bit too silly and repetitive once Lynda Baron and Leee John turn up later on (less Sapphire and Steel, more Christmas Pantomime - sorry, Lynda). Still, there's something delightfully creepy and surreal about the whole serial and it is without doubt, one of Davison's better stories.
9/10

Thought the music for this story was great. Particularly Wrack's party music...
