He gave off a creepy vibe and he was very good at being sinister without being over the top. As much as I like Anthony Ainley, he will always be the best Master.

He gave off a creepy vibe and he was very good at being sinister without being over the top. As much as I like Anthony Ainley, he will always be the best Master. I love how polite he could be - "My dear Miss Grant..." - yet the vicious rage would flash through when being let down by some incompetent acolyte. And I remember really wanting him to be a reformed character - so politely convincing (and seemingly defeated) was he - when the Doctor went to visit him at the start of "The Sea Devils" Alas......

The Roger Delgado Master was charismatic, charming, confident, polite, resourceful, ruthless, stylish, but most of all... likeable.
There's a reason why the extras cheered for him when he was being led off at the end of THE DAEMONS... and while there've been other likeable and talented actors who've followed in his footsteps, there will only ever be one original.
And while we'll never see his like again, we were lucky to have him for what little time we did.

The best Master by far. I felt at the time that he was used too much, but rewatching the stories with an adult perspective, he was absolutely brilliant (children's show my a*se!!!). So sad he left us so soon, as his portrayal had so much more to give if used sparingly...
Anthony Ainley was OK I suppose and maybe could have been better still with better direction, but he pales in comparison with Mr Deglado, who didn't appear to be 'acting' in the role (apparently in real life he was the kindest gentlest man...).

He was perfect as The Master.
I would have loved to have seen him do a story with Tom Baker as The Doctor...
Imagine The Deadly Assassin, but with Delgado playing The Master in his decrepit form..
No disrespect to Peter Pratt..
But imagine Delgado, but with out such a heavy make up job, but just enough to make him look like an Egyptian Mummy type of thing.
A sort of version on what Boris Karloff had in the first UNIVERSAL Mummy film.
The best Master, no one came close to his performance, though I do love Ainley.

When I first saw Jon Pertwee's early stories in the early-mid 70s, I found Pertwee's Doctor arrogant, egotistical, always acting smug and superior, and with a definite chip on his shoulder. (He didn't like being stuck on Earth.)
But The Master... he was suave, cool, charming...but dangerous and homicidal. There was definitely something "wrong" there. When your main recurring villain is MORE LIKABLE than your hero, something weird is going on.
Back in early 1975, I was actually inspired to create a character in my home-made mini-comics based on him. But I never quite got his face or personality right. Absolutely the CRAZIEST thing... when I re-read those stories around 2001, I suddenly realized something inexplicable. What I'd put down on paper in high school actually resembled, both in face and in personality, Anthony Ainley's CHARICATURE of The Master. But I'd never seen Ainley's version at the time! It was insane. But, I figured, okay... when I then wrote some new stories about MY guy, I deliberately based him on Ainley... and got him dead-right.
So then, several years later, while writing a novel, I decided to try "casting" Roger Delgado as one of the characters (a different one) again. And after all those years, I NAILED him perfectly. For the 2nd time, I'd "cast" him as a good guy-- albeit, one who put out "sinister" vibes. I managed to capture his personality so perfectly (I thought), that every time he'd speak, it was just hilarious.
I hope I can find a literary agent one of these days and get that thing published. It was one of the best things I ever wrote.
Back in the 90s, I read an interview with Barry Letts, in which he apparently "explained" the Master. My (late) friend in Wales argued that the "explanation" didn't really make sense. However, YEARS later, I read another interview with Letts, and it seems the earlier explanation was only one he considered, NOT the one he actually worked with. And the instant I read it, EVERYTHING about The Master, his behavior, and The Doctor's behavior toward him, suddenly make PERFECT SENSE. It's just a shame they never did the intended "final" story that would have explained it onscreen-- while KILLING him off, permanently.
He was The Doctor's BROTHER.
The stories they did since Delgado died, however, run counter to this. Damn shame.
