I remember it first as - I think - a picture in "The Doctor Who Monster Book". Then, in the eighties as Ian Marter's gory novelisation - and giving up on it - not getting very far beyond someone getting shot in the back of the head and the blood mixing with the white of smashed milk bottles and egg yolks or something. Finally saw the story on VHS, with the Nick Courtney links and enjoyed it. I like the animation on the DVD too.

When the Doctor and Jamie are being stalked by Benton and UNIT at the beginning of episode 2 they walk past a piece of corrugated iron fence that has painted on it:
"To Lulu - Demon and your incomplete education"

The Invasion's a classic. A really well directed story (the action sequences in particular) that always kind of reminded me like one of those episodes you used to get in those old ITC adventure series (The Champions, Department S etc.) you know, with some sort of weird industrial shenanigans going on and a megalomaniac boss behind it all with world domination in mind.
Speaking of which, Kevin Stoney as Tobias Vaughn is the stand out performance here and what makes this show for me. Cool, calm, collected mostly, with outbursts of fiery rage, very suave, all makes for a most chilling and memorable villain. “PACKER”?... Mind you, Vaughn was lucky in episode 6 that Watkins shot at him in the body and not his head...
Loved the design of the Cybermen in this and them being used sparingly seems to make 'em much more effective. Loved the music too - very sort of cold war-ish/sixties spy music stuff.

Memorable comedy moment that's a bit grim on closer inspection...

I was so shocked and annoyed to find that episodes of Doctor Who were missing from the archives when I read the Who mag back in 1981 and even more shocked to find nothing of Tomb survived at all and The Invasion was only missing episode one!!! Well this was an error as episode four was also missing but what we do have of this story is pure gold and The Cybermen here are fantastic with their new helmets and same Wheel costumes marching around London while most of the human race is asleep at the hands of the Cerebration Mentor device! Then the silver giants erupt from the sewers and kill any humans resistant to the force! A bit like the film of 1963/64 The Earth Dies Screaming and those robots looked a lot like primitive Cybermen too! JB

It's only 62 minutes too! Could have done with another thirty minutes at least I think, Cyggy! JB
