My 11 year old self was a bit excited, and I remember part one seeming to work. I recognized points on which it was derivative of The Five Doctors, but I found that endearing at the time, so I think I liked it....
... but I didn't know any better back then.
I do remember part 2 being where it started to lose any pretense of making coherent sense, and I vividly remember the DWM letters page being full of either fan attempts to make sense of it or just declaring it bad television. I think the most angry letters summed it up though. It didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. It might have worked as a knowing comedy on the show but it wasn't very funny and often felt like a humorless checklist. It's just a nothing-burger overall.
Insipid sums it up.
The deleted scenes suggest that some of Kate O'Mara's best moments were denied to us in the final product.

It's OK for what it is. It's just meant to be a fun skit for charity.
I do understand the disappointment associated with it, after all it was broadcast in the 30th anniversary year.
If there had been a, "proper" Doctor Who special as well as this, Dimensions In Time might be more fondly remembered
But that's the BBC for you....
Why pay out for a decent Doctor Who story, when you can get the actor's etc for free "charity" work...

There was almost, of course, that "Lost in the Dark Dimension" movie length special that I believe was cancelled mainly due to early negotiations for what ultimately became the Mcann movie. Plus no one had asked Colin, Pete or Sylv if they wanted to actually take part, with a full (Tom-centric) script written on the assumption that they would. I have always suspected that JN-T took the " Dimension" title as a snarky bit of revenge, because it was his suggestion to do a feature length special in the first place and (according to Marson's biography) the project had been taken out of his hands by the head of BBC Enterprises or whoever, so I guess JN-T kind of got the last word on this occasion.

From what I remember, though I could be wrong, wasn't Tom paid for Lost In The Dark Dimension anyway? I didn't know that. Well done Tom, if so. Afraid I'm not so generous. If it is true, I think it's a real slur on the other surviving Doctors, and feeds into Tom's ego. In their time, Hartnell and Perters, at least, were just as popular, and Hartnell's ratings, to begin with, have never been equalled. That's without one of the only 3 TV stations operating at the time. Don't get me wrong, Tom is/was a great Doctor. Given a good director and a strong producer reigning in his excesses. But Bill, Pat, Jon, Davo, Colin and Slyv (if he had been given a decent budget and time) were also as well.
