Have never been quite sure what to make of this story. I think the Toymaker probably loses a lot of his mystique by pulling him into our reality - in Blackpool of all places. And again I think the production team would have cooked up a bizarre approximation of his original costume, with a somewhat embarrassed Michael Gough wearing it (despite fan art always having him in an exact replica of his original).
Having said that, it seems an enjoyable enough romp, in it's own way?

It's such a shame that this story was never made and where we might have got some inkling as to what exactly the Toymaker actually was! Plus Michael Gough taking a role he had taken twenty years previously with the great William Hartnell would have been lovely! Now sadly both toymaker actors are gone as David Bailee has also shuffled off this mortal coil for lands unseen by mortal man... JB

Judging from the Big Finish adaptation, we sure *were* robbed....
I would've loved Colin's era to have gotten a story like this. Something definitely feels missing without it.

There seems to have been some debate over the years about whether it was the Rani or the Master (or both) that was in this story. JN-T reveals (from about 10:25) in this video that it did indeed seem to be both (while answering a question about which was the story he most regretted not being made)..... albeit adding that it never got beyond a story treatment. Haven't heard the audio, but did read the book. The story descended into (seemingly) endless scenes of Colin Baker under the influence of a sonic frequency that was making him attack everyone around, which I am sure Colin would have played with brio, but it didn't make the Doctor seem very heroic. Can't remember much else about it though. To be fair, would have to re-read it or listen to the BF version.

The opening "Doctor cowering in the TARDIS from the bully, Anzor", scenes really colour this story for me as I thought they were terrible. Any attempt to experience the rest of the story never really recovers from this start for me - which is probably my loss. I also think that - despite retrospective fan-art always showing the 1960's/1970's design of the Martians - the Ice Warriors would have undergone a perhaps somewhat clunky JN-T Era redesign, a la the Silurians/Sea Devils/Omega. Am not sure how such a redesign would have gone down with fans at the time?

A three parter, directed by Graeme Harper, with the Brig, The Master/Rani, Benton, the Autons and shot in Singapore. From a Robert Holmes script. There is so much that could go right with that concoction. But could it instead have been a case of one episode too many - and too many shopping list ingredients in the mix - for even Harper to have got there in terms of producing another classic?
