Apparently this was JN-T's least favourite story, as he felt it was everything that he was trying to get away from.
I quite like it. The plotting is nice and crazy and- although I do feel that the Chronic Hysteresis went on a bit too long, it was nice to see Jacqueline Hill back on the show. I do wish she had come back as Barbara at some point though.

Rather underrated, this. Not as much fun as it would have been the previous year but by God it's good to get something entertaining and amusing again after painful ponderousness of the previous tale. Again, never gotten the panning this one gets. It's just good natured fun.

"I think what we've got here is a good old-fashioned doppelganger."
Meglos features Tom and Lalla, so I'm never going to dislike it too much, but I do find it the weakest story of Season 18, especially following The Leisure Hive. This serial looks terribly cheap (well, cheaper than normal) and there's just something lacking about it - Meglos simply plods along and feels shoddy and half-hearted. However, it was lovely to see Jacqueline Hill back in Doctor Who, I like the Savants' UFO-style wigs and also enjoy the science vs religion stuff. Plus there's a kind of wacky Douglas Adams feel to these episodes (the chronic hysteresis, Grugger and Brotadac, the talking cactus, etc.) but without being particularly funny.
Some good ideas but generally disappointing.
6/10

Nearly done it on a re-watch. It's got BARBARA in it (sorry) and some light hearted moments I think...
Interesting how Jaqueline Hill (r.i.p.) felt the show had totally changed from the mid sixties to 1980 or so. I wonder what she'd think of the latest incarnation?
Actually, comments made as regards Tom's then ongoing health in the last story make me wonder why he seems less 'exuberant' in these final stories of his, not just the change of production direction. I won't know until I've finished re-watching them all.
Got to say I'm enjoying the extras on these discs as they give someone like me huge insights into the stuff going on in the background and thereby better understanding of how the stories were made and so on.

JNT was determined to reshape the show, which included the complete surgical removal of all comedy. By definition, that essentially meant the removal of TOM BAKER. The entire season was in effect a case of "running him off" until he got the hint and decided to leave, so it would then look like it was his decision, and not JNT firing him.
JNT was also determined to get rid of both Romana and K-9, as the "intelligence" level of the 3 leads were all too high in his view of things.
The result, in the long run, was an entirely new cast the next year, consisting of 3 idiots and 1 smart girl who they tried very hard to KILL OFF in only the 2nd story (1st one filmed). I've read Peter Davison speaking up was the only reason Sarah Sutton wasn't made gone early-on. (Hell, I'd have preferred both Tegan AND Adric be killed off instead. I couldn't stand either one of them.)
