8 for me.
I first saw it in late 2002. WH Smith had released it on video as part of the Time Lord Box Set with The Three Doctors and The Deadly Assassin. I marathoned the whole thing in one night and it actually flew by, and I remained hooked to the end. The pacing was surprisingly good, the battlefield material superbly directed, the guest characters very likable.
The ending certainly was poignant too. What a Tardis team for the Time Lords to break up, and in such a cruel way...?

I’ve decided to rewatch The War Games.
It still drags a bit in the middle and watching the fight scenes I’ve seen less contact than an Italian football team penalty box.
Phillip Madoc is awfully good though.

I came to believe that he was the Master too in the last few years! He has that Masterish aura plus if regeneration had have been created around this time then there's no way that the Delgado Master would not have been revealed as the War Chief in Terror of The Autons. If you listen to the scene with the Time Lord and the Doctor then it reveals that the Master is a foe the Doctor has only recently defeated and has come to earth to revenge himself upon the Doctor and all of humanity! Am so glad that Pat went out on a great story. Well, I've finally got to this one after working through them all and you know, I feel really sad as it really was the end of an era both then and also now for me. Once again, I disliked JP at first, such is my ASD leaning, and it took a while to get used to the new colour format too, but I'm jumping ahead of myself here.
The War games does go on a bit, but the acting and production crew help carry it along as they always did and I feel the main characters all went out on a high, the audience wanting more. I don't have an issue with The Time Lords personally and yeah, 'He was bored' which is definitely in character as to why he left - I wonder if Susan snuck a ride rather than travelled intentionally?
Not finished the story yet, but for me, a great ending to a wonderful era and all these years on, eternal love and sincere thanks to all involved

Why write when you can overstuff it overemotional bilge.. I don't think either of these two were particularly concerned with Science Fiction adventure story telling - they just wanted the viewers to overdose on sentimentality, pity and sadness, and turn the show into some kind of mawkish tragedy.

Getting near the end and yeah, the War Chief for me HAS TO BE The Master in an earlier incarnation As with so many stories here, so many different levels I think.

Well, I finally finished watching the story and you know, in me mid 60's and having watched it first time round, I again wept inside at the end - bloody pompous Time Lords!!!!!!!!! I LOVED Pat Troughton's portrayal and that vibe has grown over the decades and can safely say he's my favourite, much as I also love and respect the other actors in the classic series who played the part. Wasn't there a break on original transmission where a new series took over - Star Trek? Love that too, but for very different reasons though. Spearhead From Space next and once again, my ASD is going to kick in a bit, adjusting rather grumpily to Jon Pertwee and the earthbound stories... Amazing how time falls away and my then teenage impressions come back to the surface.
