The saddest regeneration story I think and Jamie and Zoe leaving was awful! They really did seem as though they were travelling in the stars for me as a kid! I always thought that Troughton was going to return after he got better from being Pertwee back in 1970! Pat did eventually return but that was in 1972/73 and for just the one story! Nobody at school seemed to even know who he was which annoyed me no end despite them knowing who the older white haired Doctor was on the screen? JB

When you see it's 10 episodes you think, " oh my giddy aunt" that's too long, not a bit of it you relish every episode, you know your losing a close friend in Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, i must watch this again very soon. Regards HGL.

I wasn't very happy with the fizzing that occurred on the DVD in parts but was told that it's the same on everyone's sets! It sort of takes you away from the action and quality of picture which was actually excellent to be honest! Can anyone remember what the reason for it was? JB

Something I hadn't noticed before till I happened across it on Clayton Hickman's Twitter. Trout had no head at the end of " The War Games". |

"We're back in history, Jamie. One of the most terrible times on the planet Earth".
Episode 1 of The War Games is near-perfect - it moves along at a cracking pace and is full of intrigue, action and mystery (with some humour). What we initially think is a story set in the grim days of the First World War turns out to be something entirely different. This is the end of the '60s and the last of of the black and white Doctor Who serials- it's only fitting that Troughton's final story should be a 10 part, epic tale that finally reveals a bit about about the Doctor's background. A great cast too - of particular note is Noel Coleman as General Smythe, and of course, Philip Madaoc is excellent as the War Lord. I'm very fond of the combination of the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe (the time traveler, the boy from the past and the girl from the future) - this line-up works well (and Zoe was less annoying than Victoria). The War Games doesn't really have a happy ending - Zoe and Jamie are separated and have their memories wiped and the Doctor is forced to regenerate and sent into exile. But it's still a grand exit for the Second Doctor.
7/10

Of course the Troughton Doctor had a head as he was whisked away to wherever in that scene. It's just that we couldn't see it or whom it was becoming. Which sort of puts paid to the idea of series 6b taking place immediately after the Trial ends doesn't it! JB

The War Games starts and ends really well, but it does sag a bit in the middle.

Part 1 of The War Games on video cassette (1990). I was very fond of the old Doctor Who VHS covers - the artwork was so much more imaginative than a lot of the later DVD designs and packaging:

This thread made me think about the stuff about the purchase of the stories in Season 6 and the fact five stories languished in the bond store waiting for censorship classification (I take it to be the first five stories, but the number of prints doesn’t add up) and the fact that The Space Pirates and particularly this story were purchased some time after the rest of the season.
There’s nothing mind blowing about this, but it’s interesting to some about how the purchasing worked.
I’ll sort the photos into a proper order and post the whole story soon.
