He had a decent handle on the Doctors character, despite a few shitty things like choking Peri and the sixth Doctors costume, he did a good job of developing the Doctor and taking him in new directions like in the seventh doctors era, whilst not smashing up the past needlessly. I really have to disagree with this. Under Hinchcliffe and Williams, the Doctor was a far richer, morally complex, adaptable, and intellectually formidable hero character. Under JNT that was all thrown in the bin and the character was regressed into a barely capable (and sometimes not even that) shadow of a hero who the writers clearly didn't have a clue what to do with (unless those writers were Robert Holmes or Terrance Dicks, who were only allowed back very begrudgingly). Some of the worst, most clueless, incompetent characterization of the Doctor happened on JNT's watch. Some of which (Warriors of the Deep) even outclasses Jodie's worst idiocy to this day. The 1970s was full of pop song tributes to the show that usually sang of what a great, mystical hero worth counting on and revering the Doctor was. By 1984 it really doesn't feel like they're speaking to the same show at all anymore. And I do find the choking Peri scene very hard to excuse. People had grown up on the Doctor as a father figure and as someone who stood against brutality to the innocent. That moment was a pointless disgrace of it all. The problem for me for that is two-fold. He was going to make the Master more dangerous, then the Doctor needs to adapt and become well-matched against him. As I highlighted above, the opposite happened, so it almost begged what was the point of raising the challenges if the Doctor was incapable of rising to them. Secondly, part of the reason Ainley's Master was more dangerous was because he was more stupidly reckless and prone to just going on a killing spree. A character like that should be one the Doctor can usually deal with quickly. Instead he ends up continually tolerating him for the best part of a decade on his own show.

I have to admit, while the general obnoxiousness of the anti-JNT crowd rarely does them any favours, I'm less fond of his stuff than I once was and I do think he made some massive mistakes from day one - replacing Romana and K9 with three of the woodenest actors to ever play companions was not a great look and I don't think Bidmead was the smartest hiring choice either. Nor am I fond of his tactic of pouring scorn on the previous (vastly superior) era to try and bum up his own. I find the 5th Doctor era rather plasticky and dull a lot of the time these days, and am not even quite as fond of the McCoy era as I was. Have even caught myself wondering sometimes if I might actually prefer the Moffat era... Oh dear. I don't agree with the endless bashing nor do I think the 80s was worthless, but I am seeing the cracks more these days in comparison with other periods.

Uncle Terry on JN-T.... OH MY GOD!!!!!
It's one thing for a pair of execs to be hating on the show for personal reasons, and then giving the show's producer a long rope to keep hanging himself with. In my view, THEY should have been removed long before they left for actively sabotaging such a financially-successful BBC property.
But to hear a well-respected highly-talented writer & story editor come out with it... well, you KNOW there was a problem.
On numerous occasions, I've seen painfully-obvious examples of people promoted above their best positions. This happened a lot in the comic-book industry. Here, you may or may not have had that, but, given JNT's leanings toward the light entertainment genre, I'd say at the very least, he was promoted on the WRONG SHOW.
I mean, seriously, Philip Hinchcliffe was forcibly removed because of the complaints of ONE loud-mouthed viewer, but those A-HOLE execs repeatedly REFUSED to remove and replace JNT? It's clear, they didn't want the show fixed, they wanted it GONE.
Terrence Dicks was one of the 2 guests at the very 1st WHO convention I ever went to. A shame I didn't have a chance to talk with him.
