I love Barbara's showdown with the Doctor in "The Edge of Destruction" - calling him a "stupid old man" - and the lovely scene where he reconciles with her at the end, plus all the Aztecs malarkey.
One of the greats.

One of the absolute greatest companions of the original era. Instantly betrays the myth that all the companions did was scream and cry. She was in many ways the Ellen Ripley of the 60s. Strong, non sexualized ordinary woman who gets by on her wits, inner strength and determination.

I like and respect the character a lot, even more now I'm properly watching from the beginning again. Barbara was able to come up with useful well thought out suggestions. I also think there was hinted at chemistry between herself and Ian that was never exaggerated or played on, but I believe most assume the two of them stayed together as a couple after The Chase. Interestingly after the dire writing of the first Doctor in recent years, the Hartnell Doctor respected Barbara a lot and I don't recall seeing any misogyny towards her (and more a fatherly/grandfatherly attitude towards Susan and Vicki) but I'm digressing...
