by Oliver Arkinstall-Jones These posters really are terrific - they make every story look very bold and exciting in a gloriously old-fashioned way. I want them all!

Definitely a fave of mine, despite some pacing problems and a very-bad print run here on PBS in the mid-80s.
It almost feels like Ian & Barbara should have had a story like this for their final one, doesn't it? Yet by here, somehow, The Doctor is able to to arrive on present-day Earth without much trouble!
For a real-life building, I cannot for the life of me fathom the design of the "Post Office Tower". I mean... WHY? What is its purpose, is it offices, or what? You could never build a thing like that in San Francisco-- too SKINNY for how TALL it is. Is it safe to assume they don't have earthquakes on London?
There is a recognizable "KPM" library track of music heard at the nightclub, which was later heard during the 1968 episodes of SPIDER-MAN (but I forget which one it is).
After being so mysterious and aloof for so long, suddenly, The Doctor returns to Earth and immediately has a government contact who can get him passes into places and help arranging military support. It feels like either he's done this sort of thing BEFORE "An Unearthly Child" and we just never heard about it, or he did a lot between scenes in this one.
Crazy trivia: William Mervyn turned out to be the MAIN VILLAIN in MURDER AHOY (1964), the 4th and final of the Margaret Rutherford MISS MARPLE films. At the climax, he and Jane actually engage in a SWORDFIGHT-- who'd believe it?
This is definitely a precursor to the UNIT era. The more I watched the William Hartnell stories, the more I realized just how varied they were, and HOW MUCH that became standard stuff on the show started during his time on the show!
And of course... The War Machines themselves were like "early prototype" DALEKS-- cruder, less manoeuverable. This is similar to how the "Zero-X" spaceship seen in the movie THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO! seems designed to suggest a crude, early prototype of the World Space Patrol ships in FIREBALL XL5, or how much of UFO feels like a flashback to an earlier, cruder prototype period for CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS. That vertical wheel thingie in the middle front also reminds me of the "cleaner robots" from "Paradise Towers".
What is it with advanced computers that as soon as they're online, they flip out and decide they want to take over all of humanity-- and how on Earth do any of them suddenly develop telepathic mind-control capability? I wonder what the earliest examples of this may have been in pulp magazine stories?
I have a hard time somehow picturing Anneke Wills being married to Michael Gough. That must have been a fun, crazy marriage! She turned up in 2 AVENGERS episodes: "Dressed To Kill" with Honor Blackman, and "The L50,000 Breakfast" with Diana Rigg.
Of course, the one thing in this story that always stands out in my memory the most, is the way actor Eisie Amamoto wore virtually the SAME outfit when HE played a villain named "Dr. Who" in my FAVORITE Japanese monster movie-- KING KONG ESCAPES. Check out the hat.
Cool article about the Japanese KING KONG films and "Dr. Who" in particular.

You could never build a thing like that in San Francisco-- too SKINNY for how TALL it is. Is it safe to assume they don't have earthquakes on London? The Post Office (BT) Tower was an architectural marvel of its time and an icon of the London skyline. It was built to handle the communications traffic out of London to the rest of Britain, which is why the midsection is covered with microwave aerials. There were also viewing galleries, a souvenir shop and a revolving restaurant on the 34th floor - although this is now closed, the building is still used for corporate events. Strangely enough, the circular design of the POT was partly because of the threat of nuclear war (apparently, the only buildings that survived the atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were round ones). London isn't San Francisco, and although we do have earthquakes in the capital, they are of very low magnitude and don't occur very often. For more about the history of the POT, see The War Machines DVD extra 'One Foot in the Past' - presented by politician Tony Benn.

"Verrrrrrrrrrry interesting!" I'm also just reminded, in Manhattan, there are now a few buildings that are MUCH taller than they have any right to be, compared to how wide they are. In this case, they were actually built because real estate in NYC has been skyrocketing in price to positively insane, inflated levels, and certain people have been designing and constructing buildings taller and taller that allow them to take up LESS area than they should be and still be safe to build. They've even included several floors in a row, here and there, of OPEN, EMPTY SPACE, connected vertically by NOTHING but girders, elevators, wiring, piping, etc. to REDUCE WIND RESISTENCE. Can you believe such a thing? It's positively INSANE.
On top of that, the vast majority of these buildings are NOT OCCUPIED. I mean. WHAT THE %^&^
