Okay, so the actual design of the War Macines is impractical and bulky, but I like the way this story plays out (apart from the clumsy removal of poor Dodo). It makes a refreshing change to find ourselves in a nightclub of the 1960's and Ben and Polly are likable characters.
And Hartnell staring down the approaching War Machine at the end of episode 3 is worth the price of admission along imo.

A letter from Innes Lloyd to Jackie Lane and her reply: Wow!! I had no idea that these letters existed. Jackie Lane's reply is extremely polite. I'm supposing that she was grateful at the time for the opportunity on Doctor Who, but her feelings about the way she had been treated soured somewhere down the line.

I love The War Machines. I love the return to modern day Earth, it's London setting and I think it's a great story.
It's a wonderful glimpse into a sparse era - the missing episodes situation makes this the only complete story to feature Ben and Polly, and the last complete Hartnell.
The latter half of the Hartnell era feels so depleted that just being able to view this 4 parter in full, which we can't do with so many of the stories surrounding it, makes The War Machines something to be treasured.

A sort of forerunner to all those UNIT stories innit. I totally dig it, especially this aforementioned bit.

"Machines cannot govern man!"
This serial was the first Hartnell story I ever saw (The War Machines VHS, 1997) and I still find it charming, playful and great fun to watch - at times, it almost feels like an episode of 'Adam Adamant Lives!'. An evil computer called WOTAN plans world domination from the top of the newly opened Post Office Tower in Swinging London, circa 1966. The Doctor is drawn to it: "You know there's something alien about that tower. I can sense it" (I wonder if anyone was actually put off visiting the POT after watching this?).
Later on, I like Polly's introduction by Professor Brett: "Now Polly's pretty smart, a cracking typist, right?", in particular the funny face that Polly pulls in response to that question! Later still, The Doctor visits the Inferno nightclub and is mistaken for "that disc jockey"....
KITTY: Well, it is our night for surprises. What does he want in here? POLLY: Oh, it's the Doctor. KITTY: Do you know him? POLLY: He's Dodo's boss. KITTY: He looks like that disc jockey. BEN: Yeah.
