Maybe not particularly gripping, with it's predictable "play game - just barely win - move onto next game - just barely win" plotting, but I don't think it's quite as bad as has been made out in recent times. I think some of the fandom resents it simply because it didn't live up to being the all-conquering classic that Jeremy Bentham insisted it was in that "Celebration" book. Mind you, he said "The Gunfighters" was the worst ever 'Doctor Who' story in the same book - so what does he know?

Not a great fan of this but there are some creepy moments if you were watching as a child.
Joey and Clara becoming lifeless at the end of episode 1 and the the creepy ballerina dolls.
The climax of episode 3 with Mrs Wiggs and Sergeant Rugg being forced to dance with the dolls doesn't look that impressive judging by the above photo.
7/10

As much as I like the Hartnell era, Michael Gough and Dodo in black fishnet stockings, I've never really got on with The Celestial Toymaker. The Doctor's rendered invisible while Steven and Dodo play children's games for four whole episodes and we're expected to get excited about clowns, ballerinas, the King and Queen of Hearts and a Billy Bunter clone. Maybe if we had more than one episode to watch - the Loose Cannon Recon is a bit of a slog. TBH, I'm not overly keen on the more fantasy-based stories, like this and The Mind Robber, though saying that, I may try to give The Celestial Toymaker Recon another watch this weekend - you never know, I might just learn to appreciate it a bit more. Perhaps...

I remember watching an interview with Terrance Dicks on one of the DVD's where he says he never liked the team's decision to make "The Mind Robber" and that he disliked when Doctor Who did fantasy.

Yes, I remember watching that! Good old Uncle Terry... I've tried and tried to like The Mind Robber and I do admit that there are bits of it I enjoy - the very surreal first episode, the cute white robots ( particularly as they are hand me downs from Out Of The Unknown), Medusa, Bernard Horsfall's Gulliver, etc. It's certainly more fun than watching Steven and Dodo playing childish games. After I rewatch The Celestial Toymaker, I may give The Mind Robber another go...

This is terrific stuff. Done by a 17 year old apparently. Puts some of the recent official animations to shame I think... Doctor Who | The Celestial Toymakers First Appearance{Spoiler}
