I never managed to get through the Donald Cotton novelisation, so first came to this story when it was released on VHS as a doublepack with the rescue way back when.... Apparently Donald Cotton was inspired to write this after he paid a visit to the set of "Carry On Cleo" - and it shows. I actually quite like this sub-genre in "Doctor Who" of approaching historical events from an amusing perspective. Certainly prefer this to the hard trudge that is "The Reign of Terror" imo.

I love this scene:
(Nero and the Doctor are sleeping in the heat when a slave enters and pours water on Nero's legs) NERO: Idiot! Fool! I'll teach you to boil me alive! Guards! Guards! You maniac! Guards! Come here! (takes a sword from a guard) Oh, wait till I get hold of you, I'll teach you. Get out of my way, Maximus! Did you see what he did? DOCTOR: Of course I did, yes, of course I did. Take him away and banish him, and don't let him ever appear again here ever. Ever! (The guards remove the slave) DOCTOR: I congratulate you, Nero, the way you handled that stupid fellow! Why, dear, it was most impressive! NERO: Oh, I'm glad you noticed. DOCTOR: Oh, yes. It was enormous control. NERO: You understand, of course, I only took the sword to frighten him? DOCTOR: Yes, I noticed that, of course, immediately. Yes.
8/10 overall

"O tempora, o mores".Simply one of the best historical adventures - funny and clever and featuring my favourite'60s Tardis crew - Billy Hartnell and Maureen O'Brien are particularly good together, with a great on-screen chemistry. Derek Francis makes a memorable Nero and everyone seems to be having a lot of fun in this four-part Roman romp. Watch this alongside Carry On Cleo, Up Pompei! and A Funny Thing Happened to Me On The Way To The Forum. IX/X

Just had to give "The Romans" a bump, after Future-Diver's post above.

One of my favourite Hartnells. It's such a lot of fun to watch. The cast look like they've having a whale of a time. It had some really amusing dialogue.

When you go back and watch this again, it becomes a real question. DID The Doctor realize what was going on with Ian & Barbara the whole time-- or was he really oblivious?
I always think it's hilarious that to save someone's life, Vicki winds up being responsible for someone else getting poisoned.
On historic and moral grounds, I tend to find the entire existence of The Roman Empire to be completely reprehensible on every single possible level, and therefore, have little tolerance for most "Roman Empire" movies. (QUO VADIS may be the worst of the bunch, despite or because of it's astonishing production values.) THE ROBE and its sequel are rare exceptions. But I do have a liking for comedies, including this one.
