I really wish we had more of Season Three. For many reasons, but one of them being Hartnell's performance in DMP. Nation and Spooner clearly know Hartnell by now and their writing seems tailored to him. Yes, he has his fluffs, but he manages to sell them as part of his performance. Was that bit of nonsense a Hartnell line fluff or the Doctor trying to slip something past one of the other characters? This is an actor in command of his role. When I was first watching DW back in the early '90s, there were times when I found some of the early stories difficult to sit through. In retrospect this is largely due to Ents using whatever prints they had around as masters which were made even muddier by Lionheart's standards conversion and compilations. I also think those early stories are particularly poorly suited for "movie" formatting and need the episode breaks to maintain proper pace and cadence. In one of WTTW's pledge drives during the B&W run, Marty Robinson admits in one of the breaks that he's disappointed by the response they were getting. Yes, some of that is resistance to monochrome generally, but the BBC did nothing to put their best foot forward and I think that has had a lasting impact on fan opinion, at least in the US. "When I was first watching DW back in the early '90s, there were times when I found some of the early stories difficult to sit through."
I had the same problem with Hartnell stories in the late '90s - much of the black and white era on VHS was proving a bit of a slog (back then, I much preferred Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker stuff). However, I feel the opposite now - it's the Hartnell and Troughton episodes that I'm most likely to go to when I want a Who fix. As for Season Three - yes, I personally think it's a bit of a shame that we have The Gunfighters serial in its entirety but not one episode of the The Mythmakers or The Massacre remain (however, I really don't mind The Gunfighters that much - the only Season Three dud for me is The Celestial Toymaker, but most of that is missing, anyway).

However, I feel the opposite now - it's the Hartnell and Troughton episodes that I'm most likely to go to when I want a Who fix. I have a little project I'm undertaking right now... I have a near-complete run of episodes on VHS from stations in Orlando, Florida and Chicago, Illinois that were recorded in the '80s. I'm digitizing the starts of every story including station idents and for the B&Ws the ending credits since Lionheart remade them. (The Florida tapes have a specially recorded intro for the Dominators that was run to honor Troughton shortly after his death.) One thing I'm noticing is how the B&W episodes are really low-contrast and fuzzy. You can even see it in Whose Doctor Who, where everything taken from 2" quad is eye-poppingly good and all the B&W stuff is listless. It's a reminder that the RT did yeoman service to the show by cleaning everything up.
