I don't understand why the regular cast are so down on this is the DVD commentary. I think it's a great little story, showing how murder mysteries can work in 'Doctor Who'. Certainly I prefer it to New Who's "Unicorn and the Wasp" - as this does not feel the need to shove a giant bee into proceedings.

Nice quaint little story this, like a gentle Agatha Christie whodunnit but without the err.. whodunnit. There's nothing to dislike about it. It got a laugh out of me with that "From Brazil?"..."Where the nuts come from" bit from ol' Davo.

This was a refreshing change at the time of transmission but it has dated badly and has some awful cliched dialogue.

From August 1981: and October 1982: Out of interest, do you know what the DWM survey results for Season 18 were? *edit* sorry, just realised these magazine covers are attached to the Black Orchid thread, not a DWM 'lovely covers' thread. Feel free to move my question, GC or Cyggy.

It's far from my favourite 5th Doctor story but I quite like Black Orchid - it's refreshing to see a purely historical story, minus the more fantastical elements (I enjoyed the 1920's music). It reminds me a bit of the old Horror flick 'The Ghoul'(1975) - the 1920's setting, the madman locked in away in a room in a big, old house, murder, etc.
Two episodes is just about long enough for this sort of thing.
6/10

I think Black Orchid's got a bit of a bad rap in recent years. It seemed to me to be a lot more popular back in the 80s and 90s.
I don't think the slagging off it got on the DVD commentary helped the situation, with only Sarah Sutton seeming to have any love for it.
I've always had a soft spot for it, it's a lovely Sunday afternoon story, neither a classic like Earthshock or the dregs like Time Flight.
In hindsight, for me, its a shame Black Orchid wasn't beefed up into a 3 or 4 parter, Earthshock into a 6 parter and Time Flight just dropped.
