Probably does qualify as the ideal 'series fauxnale' for the original show, given it sees off the Daleks and reveals why The Doctor came to 1963 in his earliest incarnation

I'd left off watching the show in the previous season and have found my re-watching of said season rather tedious, with what I regard as sometimes lacklustre commentries compared to those of Tom, Peter and Colin at least. I'm just about to start this one (again ) and can't wait, as it brought me back to the show with a bang and I didn't at all mind Sylv in this one (the negative news clippings above I understand, but coming forward to today, Sylv's Doctor is in a different league I feel and he rightfully deserves hs place in the canon of the show, unlike two others recently I can think of - cough... Can't wait to start - tomorrow now:)

Done episode 1 and I love it all over again Pam Salem looks so like Barbara and I'm sure that was deliberate.

I remember really liking Pamela Salem in "The Robots Of Death". And, she played Moneypenny in NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (being one of the better things about that often-dodgy film). It was cool to see her back in "Remembrance", as the character filling in for Liz Shaw. (Or, Barbara Shelley in the film QUATERMASS AND THE PIT.)
I remember my late friend in Wales, Robin, not thinking much of this, but that may have been after he lost his eyesight, so there may have been a lot of this he simply didn't "get".
It was such a DRASTIC upgrade from the previous season, it was shocking. Not only did they put behind them the feeling that they had no idea what they were doing, but that slight, vague HINT about The Doctor having a dark side (in "Delta", of all places) came out much stronger here. I definitely agree with Thomas that The Doctor DID NOT set a trap for The Daleks back in 1963... he just wanted to hide the Hand Of Omega, and then, many years later, when he had enough control of his TARDIS to actually go EXACTLY where he wanted, he got the idea to set a trap. I don't believe The Daleks knew about it in advance, or were even planning to go to Earth in late 1963, until, SOMEHOW, The Doctor let them know this incredible weapon was there and they should try to get their hands on it. What he didn't quite expect was 2 factions fighting to do so. And it was very cleaver misdirection to make audiences think the "rebels" were Davros' Daleks, whereas by here he had already won a war and HE became the "Imperial" side.
Ace may have been the biggest surprise for me. I HATED here in "Dragonfire". Here... I got to LIKE her.
I got to REALLY like her in "The Happiness Patrol", but looking back, I very quickly remembered what I'd read in DWM and realized that because of that STUPID scheduling problem with some sports event, they'd SCREWED over the continuity and character development in one of the first times in ages the show actually had any.
The Doctor & Ace are NOT quite working as a team here. In "Happiness", they're firing on all cylinders. You go and do what I've been doing FOR DECADES now... watch the stories in the order they were SUPPOSED to be seen in. In "The Greatest Show In The Galaxy", slowly, over the course of 4 episodes, The Doctor & Ace pick up exactly where they left off in "Remembrance"... but just about mid-story, get closer and begin working more as a team.
The plotting & pacing in "Silver Nemesis" in so INSANELY lightning-fast, that, combined with the fact that half the plot is a blatent REPEAT of the plot of "Remembrance", it couldn't be more obvious that it was designed as the SEASON FINALE.
It'll be a lot of years before I can upgrade this show to Blu-Ray... but I'll guess (if my box set of Adam West's BATMAN is any indication) that the Blu-Ray of Season 25 STILL has the stories in the order they were broadcast. But it's much easier to play around with what order you watch, with discs, than it is, with videotapes.
