Mixed feelings about this one. I think it's really well done as a story - and love the concept of a horrifically emaciated Master out for his final revenge.
But I really do prefer the Time Lords as the lofty, God-like beings of "The War Games" and feel that every time we go back to Gallifrey and show them in a petty light, we diminish something about the show as a whole?
I suppose, in a long running show, you can't help but explore the background a bit more as writers and creatives in charge, but I still think they should maybe have kept away from Gallifrey as much as they could, rather than familiarity breeding contempt - and more recently, "The Timeless Child" nonsense.

One of my all time favourite stories with the return of the Master for the first time in nearly four years! I always recall being confused at the time that the Master's picture was shown in The Sun newspaper and being that of a hideous rotted skeleton face rather than another bearded actor! I knew of the Time Lord ability to regenerate and change the actor idea but the actual appearance was confusing enough to make me doubt that this was the same Master as we saw in the early 70s! Later on we learned of the Time Lord limits to regenerating and the Master's hatred of them and the Doctor, enough that he would not only destroy Gallifrey itself to begin a new cycle of lives but also the reputation of his oldest enemy! The only part of the story i found not quite right was that no one on Gallifrey knew the truth of where their power came from or that a black hole resided under the Panopticon!!! JB

Gave it a 9/10 for Peter Pratt's performance as the Master alone. Bitter and twisted, exuding hate, what with that and the costume, made for quite a menacing and revolting looking creature.

"Doctor, you will never amount to anything in the galaxy while you retain your propensity for vulgar facetiousness."Superb, game-changing adventure from my favourite Season. I remember first seeing the cadaverous Master and all the political shenanigans of Gallifrey and thinking to myself "This programme really isn't for kids anymore" (Mary Whitehouse agreed with me ). Plus, it was marvelous to see the Fourth Doctor without a companion, for a change - Tom really excelled. Nice also to see the return of Eric Chitty in Doctor Who as Co-Ordinator Engin. Chitty had previously appeared in The Massacre Of St Bartholomew's Eve, playing Charles Preslin. 10/10

This is the bench mark story in Tom Baker's reign for me! I mean that when I was recording the series from Super Channel in 1987 I was SO waiting to get this adventure on tape. Couldn't care much about what came afterwards just that I wanted this one! Parts two and three they edited together on the Sunday near Christmas of course without the end and beginning credits and in fact added in Sylvester McCoy's jingle instead! GRRrrrrr JB

The thing with Robert Holmes's statement was that unless he is implying it off screen, the Time Lords had no idea where the Troughton Doctor was in time and space and for that matter the Hartnell Doctor as well! It was with the Pertwee incarnation that they first began to send him out on missions to keep the time lines straight and the web of time uncorrupted! Although Holmes did have the Troughton Doctor visit the space station Camera III and have him as an unwilling agent of the Time Lords but whether this was set after his era or strangely enough during it has never been actually identified! The series 6b title has been given to The Five and Two Doctors stories and at least two books that I know of! A final note is I believe The War Chief to be The Master that The Doctor knew back on Gallifrey whilst the Chief knew of his fascination with the TARDIS and was probably present during the scandal of his escape from the Time Lord planet at the time! Also it explains a lot with the Delgado Master being so obsessed with the death of the Doctor and the destruction of the earth for his interference here on the War Lord planet! Nuff said! JB
