When first seeing this on broadcast, I thought it one of the most eerie and scary stories of all. The cliffhanger where the Doctor and Sarah are being ejected into space was one that stuck with me. The cover of the book (first edition anyway) was one of the more unusual and striking ones, I thought. Cementing this in my mind as an offbeat classic. Then, when I finally caught up with it again on VHS the magic was gone. Just didn't seem scary anymore. I intend to watch it again sometime and hope that my love for it will come back. Fingers crossed, but until then I remain disappointed at what seems to be a cheating memory.

Excellent planetary set design and a superb first episode - but the story is letdown by a seemingly under rehearsed Prentis Hancock.
8/10

Elisabeth Sladen's favourite story according to the DVD commentary.

I thought Planet Of Evil must be about a massive scary dismembered head with red eyes that would just go crashing through the trees, killing people. And I remember thinking that it was weird that the title for it wasn't The Face Of Evil, as surely that was one massively evil face. And yet the cover of The Face Of Evil had no evil face on it. Had me very confused between the two stories for a sizeable chunk of my childhood, lol. I saw it for the first time when it was released on video. Good little story, worthy of a 7, I reckon. It's not a Season 13 classic like Pyramids, Brain and Seeds Of Doom, but it's still a great adventure.

I've never really liked this story, for me, something about it just doesn't work

Sorsenson's glowing red eyes as he turns into a monster really frightened the crap out of me as a kid.

I like the setting for this story a lot. The edge of the theoretical universe plus at a point in time long after the earth is just a distant memory or even a legend! The show was so greatly managed at this time that the scenarios were almost believable! JB

Those illustrations accompanying the listings are fantastic - we only got the Radio Times at Christmas, so I wouldn't have seen them. The notion of simple little black and white pictures sitting alongside the TV listings is charming and nicely old fashioned.

I’ve got the censorship file for this story and there was much discussion regarding ‘desiccated corpse’ and whether they needed to be removed.
Fortunately it was past uncut.
I rather like this story. It owes a huge debt to Forbidden Planet though.
Prentice Hancock does seem to think he’s playing more psychotic version of Vaber though.

Was Planet of Evil An Actual Evil Planet?
