I've always liked Anthony Ainley's Master. He adds a certain charm to whatever episode he's in.
I remember struggling to get through Trial of a Timelord because it's a bit long, but as soon as the Master appeared everything started getting exciting.
He's got the best laugh for the Master as well.

My attitude toward a lot of stories & characters keeps evolving over the decades. I remember the last time I re-watched "The Keeper Of Traken", thinking just how much I liked Ainley in the role of Tremas. The only problem was, like Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's novel, he held back too much for too long, allowing the evil to gain a foothold while he and the Doctor were increasingly suspected of being the bad guys (by a populace of ALLEGED peace-lovers who turned corrupt way too fast to be believable-- or the slightest bit sympathetic!!!).
Things just-- barely-- had a good ending... until that epilogue. GOOD GOD. How I wish they'd simply NEVER done that. So much of what down in JNT's run seemed "interesting" the first time I watched it, when I didn't know where it was going. But on repeat viewings... I increasingly wanted to KILL the writers... the story editors.. and the producer, who just never went away until the show itself was finally gone.
On a more obscure, and personal note... BIZARRE but true... I was so inspired by Roger Delgado in the early 70s, that in early 1975, I modelled a costumed hero in my own home-made mini-comics on him. At the time, I only did 4 comics with him, but I enjoyed them so much, I always wanted to do more.
Decades later, in 2001, I decided to re-do the initial mini-comic with full-size color art. But I noticed something that flipped me out when I looked back on my earlier work. I had never quite managed to capture the look or the personality of Roger Delgado on paper. The character I did was more like an exagerrated charicature of him. But more... when I looked at the art... he didn't look like Delgado. He looked more like ANTHONY AINLEY.
Which was NUTS, since I had never laid eyes on the guy back in '75-'76.
So, when I re-did the art, I went out of my way to make my character look like Ainley.
And a few years later, when I finally did write a new story with him... I WROTE him like Ainley. I could hear HIS voice in my head when I wrote dialogue. It was spooky!
I'd hate to sound conceited here... but I came to feel I was giving Ainley BETTER writing than he got in most of those 80s DOCTOR WHO stories! (I guess that can happen when you really like someone you're "casting" in a story.)

Then in 2006, while writing my 1st novel, I based one of the characters on Roger Delgado. THAT time, I finally DID manage to capture his personality on paper. Better late than never!
