I've just finished watching The Dominators, the latest in my anniversary month re-watch. I thought it was too easy to pick out a Troughton favourite like The Web Of Fear, The Seeds Of Death or Tomb Of The Cybermen, and went for The Dominators as I wanted to see if my previous opinion on it might have softened.
It *is* a slog to watch. It's five episodes (WHY!!??) of plodding and procrastination, not only as a script but by the Dulcians themselves.
The Dominators - Rago and Toba - are a great watch. Both actors were fab in their roles and added a sinister (Rago) and sadistic (Toba) edge to the proceedings. If only more could have been done with these two characters. Any scenes involving just the Dulcians becomes an absolute bore-fest, because whether by design or not, they *act* bored. The Dulcian council look like they've just woken up in their seats, and Kando and Teel are dreadful.
On the plus side, the Quarks are a cool design, something different. Squeaky voiced killers.
Wasn't this story where Patrick Troughton realised that he'd had enough and decided to give up the role of the Doctor? (or am I getting that wrong?)
As a lifelong Doctor Who fan I can't pretend that The Dominators is unfortunately anything other than a struggle to watch. There are some entertaining scenes, particularly while the Doctor and Jamie are held captive on the enemy spaceship, but not nearly enough to keep up the momentum over 5 gruelling episodes.
I scored it a 4 previously, (which is just for the regular cast, Rago, Toba and the inventive design and realisation of the Quarks) and tend to agree with that score still. It's not my least favourite Classic Doctor Who story but it's pretty damn close, within the bottom ten.

Watching this again on DVD, I'm finding layers in the characterisations I'd not noticed before. Certainly subtleties that kids back then and definitely today, wouldn't notice. The Dulcians to me remind me of many today in the strata of leadership (not going any further). The Quarks are funny but kind-of work in this story I suppose Yeah, it's ok really

The Quarks sans costumes... Cos later on John Hicks would turn up as the Axon Boy in The Claws of Axos.
