Nice looking story - and a bold new start to a new era... But not much substance to it?

The opening titles and new music theme tune didn't come as too much of a shock when this story's first episode aired - as I remember seeing this trailer earlier in the day, giving an indication that change was in the air.... 1980 Doctor Who Trailer for The Leisure Hive

I give it a 2.
It is an incredibly difficult, impenetrable story to get through in my experience.
I first watched (or attempted my first watch) in 2001 when I got it on video (Forbidden Planet were doing a 2 for 1 offer, so I got it with Carnival of Monsters, and the contrast between the easywatch and the hard watch was staggering).
I suspect were I watching at the time I probably would've turned traitor to Buck Rodgers.

" You've got the century wrong, you've got the season wrong and you've got K9's sea-water defences wrong." "Well, I can't get everything right".The Fourth Doctor, Romana 2 and K9 (my fave Tardis team) - weird Bidmead science (Tachyonics!), Mafia-inspired reptile-aliens, Brighton beach, the wonderful Adrienne Corri, new theme music, Peter Howell's grand score, Lalla's lovely sailor suit, aging Tom, zero gravity squash, Pangol the baby, etc. There's lots to like about The Leisure Hive.
8/10

Painfully bad. Remember watching this on a marathon and going from the warm fun of the Williams era to this dry as burnt toast borefest was genuinely painful.

So, Tom's final season, apparent production emphasis on less 'humour' it seems, which Tom previously excelled at I now feel and a preference in this story for when Tom played it straight, judging by the sometimes to me 'awkward' DVD commentary, thereby perhaps strangling this particular leading actor in the attempts to reign him in maybe a bit too late after his years playing the role the way he knew best? I appreciate the view to want to update the title sequences and show as a whole and make th emusic more 'keyboard modern' as synths were coming on strong in popular music more and more, but speeding it up and altering the pitch accordingly? I kind of got used to it by Davison's era, but after years of the original in one form or another, re-watching today still puts uncertainty in my mind, as does the production w@nk fest of modern 'Who... Story not easy to follow and again, it seems that budget and time didn't allow a more detailed approach which may have improved it. Lalla looks fab of course, but is she not being used enough - not 'engaging' as she did in some earlier stories? No idea how she and Tom were getting on at this point as in her commentary, she seemed to be suffering increasing irritation with his larger than life and scene/camera-stealing persona without actually criticising him. Is that just me here? Cold handedly blowing K9 up like that may have been fun, but surely a better way to quietly retire the character? I won't know if K9 returns until the next story as I never anally remembered all details as Ian Levine does. I'm still enjoying the rewatching though

In the long run... I don't like the new logo, the new recording of the theme song, and the efforts to COMPLETELY surgically remove any humor from the stories. There's ways to do things, but DOCTOR WHO too often takes the extremes rather than something more subtle. There's this thing called "balance", and the lack of it has murdered a lot of shows over the years.
Look at the Adam West BATMAN. The 1st season had a very unusual balance of "adventure show" and "weird humor". The 2nd season it became a SITCOM with costumes. (And there are some later fans who think the 1st season was "strange" compared to the later ones.) People often insist "audiences got bored". I say audiences got fed up with the show getting STUPIDER as it went.
DOCTOR WHO spent 4 entire seasons doing "gothic horror". I like gothic horror-- but every single story for 4 years is ridiculous. There was a better balance in season 16, but season 17 it started to look and feel cheap and TOO silly. Then season 18 went COMPLETELY the other way. Something midway between the two might have been a lot better.
My favorite stories in season 18 are "State of Decay" (except for Adric, who almost ruins it) and "Warriors' Gate" (which is just so off-the-wall and bizarre). "The Keeper Of Traken" is not bad (I rate it as Adric's ONLY decent appearance) but the allegedly "peaceful" people on that planet mostly turn out to be suspicious and corrupt, and Tremas makes the same fatal mistake that Van Helsing does in Stoker's "Dracula"-- NOT telling people what he suspects is going on, until it's too late, and all the good characters become suspected of being the villains. Killing Tremas off at the end was, frankly, unforgivable. In many ways, the whole series fell right off a cliff after that moment.

P.S. Tom is very kind in his senior years I have to say, but I bet his disagreements with JNT really annoyed him at the time (and didn't ratings start to slide in this season?) and it seems his fiery relationship with Lalla were well known, at least during rehearsals.
I do understand from posts above and the special features on the DVD that the feeling was that the show had become 'The Tom Baker Show' but looking back, that's why it was so popular, wasn't it? Got to say the 'slightly older' look after seven years may well be lifestyle or stress rather than seven years older. He does look a little gaunt in this and that drab red coat, hat and scarf doesn't really suit him either I feel.

I don't know if you know, but the slightly older and gaunt look you speak about....Tom was ill with something (I don't think the illness has ever been disclosed) around this time. Season 18 was filmed out of order so he looks a little frail during Meglos and State Of Decay. By the time Full Circle is recorded he's looking more robust.

It was some form of tropical infection that he picked up abroad if I recall correctly. It got so bad that his hair started thinning and losing it's curl and subsequently had to be permed for all the stories (You can see in State of Decay how thin and wispy it is and it's obvious in Warriors Gate that it's a tight perm).
