I do think that Matthew's book "Blue Box Boy" was a very entertaining journey through the end of the Tom era and the start of Peter's era, showing all the behind the scenes tensions and craziness that went on. This and Richard Marson's JN-T book, along with Carmel's book give a pretty much overall picture of the John Nathan-Turner years between them. That's once you get past Matthew referring to himself as "Matthew did this, Matthew did that" throughout. Understandable imo, as it was so many years ago that in some respects he probably is writing about a different person - although it's still a little jarring at first for an autobiography to take this approach?

What fictional death affected me the most?
Miss Calendar's in Buffy.
I'm sad to say I went into Adric's era, prepared to think maybe he doesn't deserve the bad rep he got in fandom (there are some stories in isolation where he doesn't seem so bad at all, like Keeper of Traken, The Visitation and Earthshock), only to be confronted with moments in Kinda and Four To Doomsday where he is so spiteful and chauvinistic to Tegan it felt like the makers were deliberately trying to make us hate him. The fact he was deemed a worthy replacement for Romana baffles me.
I've probably missed the window on Blue Box Boy but it looks like it might've been an interesting read, albeit one I'd probably read with a dubious eye.

I actually see it quite different from you. Personally, I think Adric has got a pretty good story arc, and I find the character really interesting. Firstly, in Full Circle, the character was introduced as an orphaned teenager who was shown as being bumptious and bratty, full of his own self-confidence, and clever, which would ultimately lead to his downfall. He spends his introduction looking down his nose at his brother and the other Outlers and is then quietly affected by the death of Varsh. He retains that quality of being completely up himself throughout, but sometimes it's more subtle than others, due to other events overshadowing such as the Doctor's regeneration. Four To Doomsday shows Adric at his most self-serving and completely out for himself, qualities that i think were bubbling under the surface in Full Circle but very much evident in State Of Decay. You say that The Visitation is one where he doesn't seem so bad. I think it again shows Adric to be unquestionably arrogant, with him piloting the TARDIS to rescue the Doctor, Tegan and Mace from the house, but also desperately trying to prove to everyone that he could match the Doctor's ability. If that scene had been written in the New Series, Adric would have stepped out of the TARDIS, stuck two fingers up at the Doctor and said "Told you I could do it." Underneath the whole arrogant persona, there had to be an element of likeability for the audience though, however big or small, and I think Adric is similar to Turlough in that respect. Any rough edges to the character have to be somewhat played down or smoothed over, or else how could they avoid the character being hated by the viewing public. He clearly idolises the 4th Doctor and wants to impress him, but feels somewhat sidelined by the 5th Doctor in favour of the girls, like a jealous brother, which maybe kicks in after the events of Castrovalva where the 5th Doctor is so reliant on Nyssa and Tegan to help him through a difficult regeneration. To me it's in Kinda that he comes off better, in attempting to fool Hindle and help the Doctor escape. Again, Adric mistakenly believes that he has the ability to get the better of Hindle, which he doesn't. As for his bickering with Tegan, he's clearly trying to deflect his own guilt over what's happened with the TSS and trying to point the finger elsewhere, which in my opinion shows a very real fraternal quality. It's what brothers and sisters do. And finally we have Black Orchid and Earthshock. Adric gets to eat a good hearty meal of chicken, quiche and spring onions, like a final feast, before he meets his maker at the end of Earthshock, in which the very arrogant display of teenage over-confidence that he exhibits in the first scene of his debut story comes back with a vengeance and it's that quality which kills him. "I CAN crack this code!!" Believing in his own ability he goes against the orders of Briggs and Scott, steps out of the escape capsule and seals his own fate. And instead of breaking down in tears at the planet Earth hurtling towards him, and screaming "F***!!!!" his final sentence of "Now I'll never know if I was right" can be interpreted as a quiet realisation that although the Cyberman destroyed the freighter's control panel, he may have over-reached himself this time, but that he will never live to find out. Adric may not have been the series most likeable companion. He clearly wasn't, but it was good to see a different angle being taken.

Funny one this. I didn't mind Adric in season 18 with Tom's Doctor but in season 19 with Davo's Doctor I just found him too bloody irritating.

I never liked him at all and still don't really. The actor had so little experience I can't help wondering if he was basically acting as himself, all doe-eyed for Tom's Doctor desperate to be loved and pretty up-himself the rest of the time (not sure that aspect had fully dissipated in the DVD commentaries either although in fairness he's very disarming as if he's expecting the put downs that don't fully arrive).
At the time, I thought he was so bad that I wondered if he'd have a future career in acting, but it does seem as if he carved a good niche for himself and I'm genuinely glad he did.
