I don't see much "discussion" here.
Also, what are those weird posts that keep turning up from other websites that discuss CURRENT WHO ? They seem to have ZERO to do with the threads they're posted in.
Okay... my first impression of "Jo Grant" matched that of The Doctor.
"I'm your new assistant." "Oh, NO!"
I liked Liz Shaw. What can I say?
That said, Jo really grew on me over the years. And by that, I mean over a LOT of years. Here in Philly, we only got up to "Day of the Daleks" in the mid-70s. I remember telling my best friend, around 1983, when I heard they were going to run the Pertwee stories on PBS (which, that first year, turned out to ONLY be those where they had complete stories IN COLOR, so about a third of the Pertwee stories were MISSING!), "Wait 'til you see Jo Grant. She's a riot."
Over the course of her entire run, she really did grow on me. If I had to pick one word to describe her, it would be... "ADORABLE". It's a funny thing, by the late 80s, she began to remind me of a friend I met in art school, or, as I like to describe it, "a LAID-BACK, LOW-KEY version of my friend". (Bonnie Langford was more like a "cranked up" version of my friend... heh.)
I'd say it as her combination of enthusiasm and sweetness that really won me over.
The last time I watched my entire collection (seasons 1-26), I actually liked her more than Sarah, which I never expected to happen. I think all of Sarah's argumentative moods finally started to bug me after decades.

Katy is one of the loveliest people ever. I remember her from Terror of the Autons but was banned mid way through that serial as I ran from the room in terror when the autojet sprayed her face. I was not allowed to watch the rest of Season 8 and we watched UFO on ATV Midlands instead. I am sure THAT was good wholesome fun for a 5 year old as I was back then!
Although not the best actress in the world in some scenes, you cannot help but fall in love with Jo Grant and her enthusiasm. In some scenes she is simply divine and always a very watchable actress.
I finally got to meet Katy in 2019 and she singled out my mate and I in the crowd when she heard us talking "Oooohhhh Brummies! I love Birmingham!" After the signing she headed over to us (we were sitting taking stock in a corner of a signing room in Richmond) and struck up a conversation. We were there for about 20 minutes and were joined by Nicola Bryant in what can only be described as "teenage dream comes true" time! Being 6ft 3 I towered over these two lovely ladies and felt like kneeling or sitting down as to not intimidate them. We chatted about animal welfare (Nicola supports dog trusts), Birmingham, screaming companions and "general stuff". It was not like these long lines that were so well highlighted in Galaxy Quest - it was an actual, real chat with four people. It was smashing.
I am a big fan of The Mind of Evil and first saw it at a group meeting in 1984. I was blown away by the feel of the story and like Inferno for its own reasons feels unlike any other story. Its a great pity Don Houghton only wrote those two as he was far and away the best writer not on the house writing staff (i.e. Dicks, Holmes and Hulke). Jo is great in that story and actually saves the day with several bits of quick thinking.
I do clearly recall the last episode of the Green Death on transmission not knowing it was the end of an era. Its a pity that Jo is remembered only as a screamer as she was a great loveable character but to be honest most of the 60s and 70s casting was so well done that they are so well remembered today.

Sarah Jane & Nicola Bryant are the only 2 WHO girls I actually had dreams about. Over the years, I had several dreams about Sarah Jane. But a few years ago, Nicola Bryant turned up in one. NOT Peri-- the actress. You know how you always seem to be walking into a story that's in progress? I was apparently a volunteer at a WHO convention, and we were in this guest lounge. There was Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy and John Levene... and Nicola was the only woman there. And apparently, she and I had gotten to be quite friends before this dream started.
When I finally woke up, I wondered, WHAT ON EARTH had inspired that, as I hadn't watched any of the show in several years by then!
I recall in that dream, Peter Davison walked into the room and sat down, I looked at him, and jokingly said, "ALBERT!" He smiled, appreciating that somebody remembered him for CAMPION.
At real-life conventions, the only WHO girl I really got to talk to one-one-one was Louise Jameson... for about 15 minutes! I swear, my admiration for her has just continued to increase over the years, ever since that night.

I finally met Nicola and Katy at a Fantom event in 2019 - the last one I went to out of three. I chatted to Nicola about her Dog Charity and she was a lovely, down to earth person that was chatting to me not as No. 1876 in the line that day but as a one to one conversation. Katy chatted to my mate and I for ages that day too. We also got a short chat with Louise and quite an involved chat to Peter Purves who said he was under the impression Mr Morris was going to return "Two of mine very soon - I wish he would hurry up I could earn some money!"
