I remember all the excitement when it was found and rushed released out on video, bought it that very day, got it home, waited till everyone had pissed off to bed (my folks weren't exactly DW fans) stuck it on, watched it, and....well, I suppose, like a few other folk, after hearing all the praise heaped on it, I felt it was a bit of a let down.
But still thought the story had a certain 'something' special to it though, a very atmospheric and creepy/eerie quality and after several rewatches down the years, I've kinda learnt to turn a blind eye to it's shortcomings. I mean it's 60's Who innit, shoestring budget and all that jazz I expect.

If there was one story that was never going to live up to the Target book adaption for me it was this one. The cover of the book, of course, had the wrong Cyberman version frozen in very real looking ice. When I finally saw photos from this story - colour photos - the snow was clearly bits of polystyrene and a very different Cyber-type. In the book the Cybermen all spoke "IN CAPITAL LETTERS" with booming voices. When I finally heard them speak on the TV is sounded to me like a Punch and Judy man was gargling salt water. It just couldn't compete. But do agree, GC that - after getting used to the telly version - I began to appreciate it on it's own merits. But thanks to Gerry Davis and that cover artist, there's still a completely different version of "Tomb" in my head that's freezing cold and bloody terrifying!

I still believe that this is the most important find of all the old lost episodes to this day! It's the greatest of the recoveries by far and to think we have all four pieces of this masterpiece!!! That music which was used on a few other adventures but especially other Cybermen stories is as iconic to sixties Doctor Who as the March of The Cybermen became to the eighties in Earthshock and Attack of The Cybermen! My only gripe is the Toberman being hauled up into the air by a Cyberman with the Kirby wires so visible it is embarrassing and the Cyber Controller dummy body being smashed about later like a Benny Hill sketch! But I for one am still very happy that this story was recovered and you can never have too much Troughton! JB

Got rid of most of my vhs collection, saving just a few. Tomb was one of the few I couldn't part with.
Anyway this might be of interest.

It's nice to see another 4 part Troughton with excellent moments such as the Cybermen breaking out of their Tombs and Victoria and the Doctor talking about their families.
But there is some pretty ropey acting (Captain Hopper, Kaftan, Kleig, Toberman, Callum and Victoria).
Glad it came back though.
9/10

"Perhaps the Cybermen aren't quite as dormant as you imagine"I do like The Tomb Of The Cybermen (it was one of the very first Doctor Who videos I bought back in the '90s) but I also find it a little overrated - it's essentially an updated Mummy's tomb story. Plus, there are some quite poor performances in Tomb - I'm not that keen on Kleig and Kaftan, nor that over-acting crewman with the naff American accent and even (the usually dependable) Cyril Shaps is rather annoying as Viner. While Victoria whines a little too much in this serial, Pat Troughton is as delightful as ever - a joy to watch. I love the scene in the first episode, when the Doctor and Jamie accidentally hold hands! The actual tomb design looks like a smashing psychedelic/pop-art play room (I love how the Cybermen have gone to all the trouble of stenciling their face/logo on practically every surface of the tomb), the little Cybermats are adorable and the stock music soundtrack is highly effective. Matt Smith was a fan of Tomb: "Tomb of the Cybermen is one of my favorite stories. It's so creepy...and I think the Cybermen are as scary as they've ever been in that one story."7/10
