I know I'm supposed to think that this story is a load of rubbish, but I actually think it's a lot of fun. Crazy Zaroff and his mad plan to destroy the world. All that Amdo malarkey - and Fish People going on strike. What's not to love! Not only that, but ( according to Anneke Wills) herself, Troughton and co. got much humorous mileage out of "You're not turning me into a fish!" for ages afterwards. 7 out of 10.

From a 2021 rewatch of the Missing Episodes only... Episode 1:(Using Loose Cannon Recon on Dailymotion)So, Jamie's first trip aboard the TARDIS. I love how the Classic series would just get on with the storytelling and after a bit of bafflement on Jamie's part and Ben and Polly telling him the format of the show, they have already landed, with no soap opera speeches or anguish - or post-modern quips - involved. Jamie is one of the crew now and that's that. Nice moment where Polly works out the approximate date. And the Doctor working out that Zaroff is there due to the food. I wonder if they used quite as much such stock shark footage in the original programme or if this is just an assumption on the part of Loose Cannon? Also am wondering if this is the actual footage used in the episode, located via paperwork? Ah, the infamous "Doctor W" telesnap. "I could feed you to my pet octopus" pushes the dialogue into Ed Wood territory. Up to now it's been coasting along as a by-the-numbers adventure, albeit a bit clunky in it's elevator down to Atlantis convenience. I think we've lost a nice little moment in Troughton's reaction to Zaroff's insane laughter at "I too have a sense of humour!" It would be nice to see how Troughton played that moment of humouring a lunatic by showing perhaps bafflement - and then ethusiastically joining in with the laughter. Once again, as with the later MACRA TERROR, there are mines for our heroes to be sent to. What is it about Doctor Who and mines? On one documentary Anneke Wills said how "You're not turning me into a fish!" became a constant catchphrase for every on-set situation after this episode! I love that! It's good to see that Atlantis is relatively intact after the events of THE TIME MONSTER and the prior interference of the Daemons. But why don't they all get the elevator to the surface and also make a life up there? It just seems horrible, self-inflicted claustrophobia to spend your days down there. Funny how Ara becomes a staunch ally and helper of our team. Almost a companion that never was? Was the author hoping that the production team might take her on board. thus giving him royalty cheques thereafter? A nice example of us having a clip from episode 1 via the opening recap of episode 2. There must be a fair few clips returned to us via this way, but I have never seen a definitive list. (Although this was originally returned to us as a censor clip at first of course, before Episode 2 was found.) I like this first episode. We have lost Troughton's laughing to humour Zaroff moment, but not much else. I suspect the return of Episode 4 would be a richer seam to find.

Episode 4:(Using Loose Cannon Recon on Dailymotion)The reshot "Nussing in the vorld can stop me now!!" at the opening of this episode lacks the welly of the ending of episode 3. The Doctor shows his medical genius by pointing out to Ben that bullets are bad for one's general physical health. Sean and Jacko are acting much like crew members on the Bounty in any of the film versions - although particularly the 1962 version - that kind of banter and quipping in the face of a crisis. I am not sure if Joseph Furst is taking the role seriously and throwing himself into it totally, regardless of it being an insane performance as an insane man - or if this is from the same school of acting as Graham Crowden as Soldeed, where he thinks the show is fair game for sending up and is actually not taking the role seriously. I lean very much to the former. I think the actor - bless him - is being absolutely committed in the role, playing somebody tipped into madness by power. A committed actor playing someone who needs to be committed. Ben's actually got something to do in this episode, calling the Doctor a berk and jabbering his way out of giving passwords. I love how the Doctor walks into the heart of the enemy's control centre, jolly as you please. Also love the "Amdo with indigestion!" quip. Whatever the faults of this story, the Doctor is true to character throughout. His wanting to return to rescue Zaroff is an example imo. Polly wants to quit and give up fleeing the rising waters, preferring to drown, while Jamie urges her to keep going. This scene would never play now, of course - or would perhaps even be pointedly reversed. Companions falling into despair helps put over the jeopardy though and I think the Classic show trumps the newer show because of it. A scared companion gives the audience permission to be scared. "A new Atlantis. Without gods. And without Fish People!". It is surprising that Big Finish haven't been back there in an unwanted sequel already! Looks like we have lost another Troughton moment when Ben says "What about Polly!" and the Doctor quietly says "Come on!" after a pregnant/poignant pause. Polly wearing the Doctor's stovepipe hat in the last scene. Never noticed that before. Lovely ending where the Doctor's assertion that he can control the TARDIS plunges them into a cliffhanger. I think this - of the two episodes - is the one to find. Wraps the story up - and is a bit more interesting than the setting up of the first episode imo.

WTF??? It's got to be grumpy old me here, but there's an animation coming which looks absolutely DIRE (if twitter links of the fish people and the TARDIS crew are anything to go by). I only bought the existing DVD last year as it was and pretty damned sure I ain't dipping again for this. I can't understand why the young animators seem to want to 'modernise' everything, as making it 'modern and trendy' usually dates it far more that using renders of the original concepts as broadcast. Is it just me here? Ah well, this disc set will join the Jodie seasons on my ignore-at-all-costs list

Ah well, this disc set will join the Jodie seasons on my ignore-at-all-costs list I agree that the style of animation for some of the missing story releases has been quite poor, but I still welcome any attempt to bring back lost TV shows, particularly '60s Who. 'The Underwater Menace' certainly isn't one of my favourite serials (it's probably Troughton's worst) but I'm hoping this new animated version will help me view it in a different light. Doubtful, but you never know...
